Washington Irving. I can remeber when I was young getting into "Rip van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" either being read to me or watching (I used to pick Disney's animated version of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow alot as a video rental when my folks let us pick videos we'd like to watch). As I got older I first got "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" as a book by itself (for those who don't know, both stories are actually from Irving's "The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon," which is a series of short stories), then I started checking out his "A History of New-York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, by Diedrich Knickerbocker" (aka "The Knickerbocker Tales"), "The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon" (aka "The Sketchbook" )and "Tales of the Alhambra." I know own two copies of "The Sketchbook" along with that copy of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."
After Irving I'm rather partial to Poe.

I like some of the children's authors. Like, Jeanne DuPrau, and Emily Rodda. Their books are short, but they're really good authors. Also, for longer books, Christopher Paolini.

Wilson Rawls, I love how his books weave in a legend. (I wish he wrote more than 2 books)
(I also like Agatha Christie and Isaac Asimov, among others)
