its not completely out, but it only comes out of one side now. I've tried and tried but just can't get it back in all the way. is there any way to do it (i've only worn these shoes twice so far, so I don't really want to but new ones)

I only have accomplished this once and I vowed I'd never do it again! It was NOT an easy task, it is very time consuming and takes lots of patience!
Here is what I did:
I took a large safety pin ( because it was easier to hold than a straight pin, and the longer the better) -- I poked the pin through the fabric and "grabbed" the drawstring with the tip of the pin & pushed the drawstring along under the fabric. Now put your finger on the drawstring so it does not pull back when you release it from the pin. This is the process, do it over and over inching the drawstring through until it comes out and you can grab it and pull it.
It worked, but it took forever.....Like I said I vowed never to doit again!

I own a dancewear store and have had to do this before. Get a plastic yarn needle, it has to be plastic to bend around the heel. Pull the drawstring out completely, thread the needle, stick the needle in the channel and gently work it all the way around the shoe. It will take awhile, 5-10 minutes, but just be patient you can do it.

You may be able to work a piece of flexible wire through the fabric opening, attach it to the string by taping, then pull it through.
Remove the string completely before.

I usually just cut the drawstrings off

you get a pin and poke it through the cloth and then just keep pushing it through to the other side that its not coming out
