Congrats! However, you will be lucky to find ANYWHERE to live, let alone being able to pick which part of the city you want to live in. There are LOTS of nice areas, so some surfing on the tourism websites, or others. There are nice older areas, expensive new ones, and the in-betweens. Depends on what you can spend, and if you can buy or rent. House prices have doubled, and rents have skyrocked recently. Good luck!

Definitely somewhere south of the river.
Mill Woods used to be a nice residential area but it's gone downhill.
areas in the South central-west are quite nice and peaceful. Areas like Riverbend, Twin Brooks, the new developements south of the city, they're all nice residential suburbs.
A lot of the areas on the North end of the city are much older, more crime, large aboriginal population, etc.
Look for something near the river valley if you're wealthy, but if you're an average middle class person, look for a place in the South/South West area of town.
Like the person above me said though, the price of housing in Edmonton has jumped rediculously in the past few years.

I highly recommend living close to where you live. much easier for a commute. but if you are working in the south part of Edmonton or in Nisku (large industrial park just south of the city) Try Beaumont, Devon or Leduc for housing also.
There is always spruce grove or St Albert to check out too
The nice thing about edmonton was the outskirts didn't feel as a seperate part of the city, you always felt like living in the city but living just outside will give you more options

Capital View Towers, 10711 Saskatchewan Drive.
Take it from someone who has had six addresses in five years in Edmonton:
There is nothing like it for living a relaxed lifestyle allowing you to walk to bars in the evening. Anything between Saskatchewan Drive and Whyte Ave will be fine, but that old address of mine gives you underground parking with plug-ins, a pool, and a view of the Edmonton skyline.

I agree that the south side is the best place to be. Being close to work is desirable so take that into consideration.
Try to visit the areas you are considering rather than just taking somebody's word for what is "better". Everyone's tastes are different. For example, the Whyte Avenue area is popular but the noise factor has made it not such a great place to live these days.
