...even though the poor kid apologized to him immediately & agreed to clean up the mess.

Was it correct of my neighbor to treat his son like that?

Several people will disagree with me, but I 'll have to say the dad was right in doing that.

If the dad had not beaten him, then he would continue to spill the milk several times and apologize every time he did that - the kid will never learn NOT to make the mistake again.

When school starts you may want to notify the boy's school that you've witnessed the father abusing the son.

Calling CPS is iffy. Parents are allowed to discipline their children.

Rather than report abuse, you may just want to be very aware of anything considered to be a domestic disturbance. As in, I'm not sure what's going on over there, but a child is screaming.

It's ok to call the police. If you don't want your neighbor to know you reported, which he probably figures anyway, just state as much to the police.

Talk with other neighbors and have them be aware, just in case.

Alert the apartment maintenence. Maybe they can go in and check the smoke detectors or something if you suspect the child is being hurt. Ask if they'd mind if you called.

"Don't cry over spilled milk"!!!
Definately don't beat a child for spilling it...just clean it up and get over it!!! There are things that a child may do that deserve some kind of punishment to make them understand consequences, but getting beaten with an object for spilling milk? UGH!!! People suck!!!
Oh, and based on some of the answers I've seen so far, the first one and anyone who agreed with him, there are obviously a lot of abusive people who suck!!!

In this country, no. However, this is a question of ethics. this is kinda like a law case that happened awhile back in conneticut. There was a plot to perform a circumscision on a female, a custom of the people of the family. However, the father of the daughter was american and did not like seeing her daughters parts cut off. so, when a docter came from overseas to perform the operation; the dad was afraid for his daughter and then murdered the doctor. during the case, the defense pleaded self-defense and won. (meaning that because of the unlawful act at hand was enough to allow the father to kill a man)

So in conclusion, no its not ok. this is the us, not some desert country where people act like animals

MYOB. What are you the child abuse police? It says in the bible spare the rod spoil the child. Now if he was whacking hm with a baseball bat, or a coat hanger, or a belt. But come on a curtain rod is thin and hollow I bet it would bend before inflicting any damage. Its probably the perfect tool for spanking your kids. If he didn't the kid would be robbing your house at 18.

It is never ok to beat a child with anything, especially for spilling milk on the floor. Although a normal spanking for other things more serious should be ok so they know who is the boss, but with the palm of your hand.

the phrase "let he who has never sinned cast the first stone "comes to mind-his father went way over the top-he attacked him with a weapon for what was little more than an accident-he should be reported.

Because the government doesn't fully control the development of its youth, it is up to the Parent's to decide how/when a child should be punished and by what accord.

I would have to agree with the first poster that a sense of responsibility for actions is required to be taught by all. Otherwise, you can simply repeat the offense, use the same excuse, and get out free.

Eventually it will come to the point where no one will actually raise their own children but have to send them all to government programs so everyone will have equal opportunity and be taught equally to make up their own minds. Creating non-unique individuals with no sense of true freedom.

NO!! As if he has never spilled anything in his life. To me that is child abuse. Me personally, I think he should be reported to the family and chilsdren services. We all have bad days or can lose our tempers, but that was totally uncalled for!

i think a curtain rod is a bit too much but there has to be some serious consenquences since that's the only way kids learn.
giving time outs doesnt do anything and kids get used to it.

Your neighbor is an abusive father. What he did to his boy should be reported to the proper authorities.
