A friend of mine was picking up gas to use for a lawnmower. As she was leaving the gas station, a car pulled out in front of her and caused her to stop suddenly...no one got hurt and there was no damages, however the gas can fell over and caused gas to spill inside the vehicle. I am looking for any suggestions as to how I can get rid of the overwhelming odor...Thanks!

Try baking soda. The pure Arm n Hammer kind. It works REALLY well at absorbing smells and odors. Just open up a box (they make the boxes now that all you do is tear off the sides and the mesh keeps it from spilling) and set it on the floor of your car. Try it.

The most effective way to "rid" odor and stains from your seats is by using a carpet shampooer. You have to get to the "root" of the smell by lifting it all the way out.You can use a gas station shampooer, and doesn't cost that much.It would be cheaper than buying the cleaner solution, plus really gets the job done. Any less than that would only mask the odor.

The odor you smell is atomized gasoline (no duh) since gas has a very high vapor pressure it only takes a little to generate a smell.

First you must ensure thatther is not so much gas vapor in your car that you risk explosion (I assume you have cleaned it up ) be careful it is really dangerous stuff in vapor form.

THe short ansdwer is heat steam heat the hotter it gets on your carpet the more gas will evapostate. gas is not water soluable (it is in iteslf a solvent but a really hot steam cleaning (maybe a few) should drive off the residual gas.

good luck and dont smoke in there!

One of the things that may help mask the odor is the spray bottle of Odorban. I know I had a similar problem, however not as much gas that you say spilled. I really soaked the carpeting with the Odorban and it seemed to help evaporate the gas smell. We found Odorban at Sams or BJ centers. The team at MOONNEWS.net hope that this helps.

Do a carpet cleaning job and then f'breeze the hell out of it, and leave your windows down for a day or so.

I had a gas spill, and it took about a week to get the smell out.

and or the response above me... : )
Just like an engineer...Has to make it harder than it has to be!

Try sprinkling a baking soda carpet freshener over the carpet and leave it there to absorb the ordors for a few hours. Then vacuum it up and see if that doesn't do the trick.
You can get the baking soda carpet freshener at any grocery or discount store (like Target, Walmart, etc.)

if it is a dark colored interior (as in nearly black floors) you can put newspaper down and but coffee grounds on top. leave the windows cracked if you can to keep the grounds from drying too much
