My daughter's apartment landlords are planning to spray for bugs. They told her if she does not comply, they will charge her $50. She doesn't want the inside of the cabinets sprayed where her dishes and glasses are kept. There is no mention of fumigation in her lease and the apartment is under new management. This is in OKC.

The management firm is attempting to provide an insect free living environment, and your daughter does not want to comply ? Makes NO sense to me.

She will be charged $50 for non-compliance because an incomplete treatment of the premises may result in further infestations.

OK...consider this, there is a reason they want to spray and that is 100% because someone else in the complex has complained of bugs. The reason they are threatening her is because if they spray all the apartments but hers the bugs will go to her apartment. This is what happens in neighboorhoods too, and is why you should coordinate with your neighboors when you spray for bugs. Not all bugs are killed by the spray.

Have her pack up her dishes and put them under her bedroom comforter (that's what I do when my building sprays) and tell her that it is a small price to pay to not have roaches in her cabinets!

I'm not sure they can charge you but they have a right to access the property for upkeep reasons as long as they give you notice ahead of time. You can negotiate a different day for the spraying to take place but you cannot deny the landlord the right to do so. Not sure if this helps.

I would let them in just because what they are doing is good for your too unless you like the bugs.

It seems fishy to me. If there is a major bug infestation in her building then they can insist on spraying to prevent damages to the building. If she refuses then in their opinion she is responsible for the damages.

The best suggestion I have would be to tell your daughter that they can only enter with supervision and request advance notice. She will have to work with their schedule but she can make sure they don't damage anything of hers and prevent any liability.

Just make sure all communication is documented.
