The registry is all the information windows needs to run, every time you install a file it adds to the reg. Sometimes when you uninstall it leaves data behind that windows tries to use to no avail. Also, a lot of viri attack the reg, so cleaning it can get rid of a lot of the simpler viri you may have.

I have a full chapter from a book that will explain this quite well. It is ch 13 from CompTIA A+ Certification Exam Guide written by Mike Meyers. This is the 2007 print/copyright.

Email me and mention Ch13 and I will send you the file.
I always use Tweak now reg cleaner, http://www.tweaknow.com/RegCleaner.html
because it tells you very clearly what is safe to delete and what is not.

Hope That Helped!

Registry errors are rarely the cause of computer slow down. In addition, one should not edit the registry unless they know exactly what they are doing. Unfortunately, even the deletion of a few registry keys can cripple - even crash - a computer. For more information, as well as a review of some registry cleaners, please read Fred Langa's article

start there. but a comp being slow does not mean it's a registery error. could mean your not maintaining your comp correctly
simply deleting temp files and cookies then defragging and rebooting can solve the issue.
