In America it has been nothing but bad! It has negatively affected and effected many facets of life thus far. When people come to America the thought is that they are giving up all they left behind in their other counrty to be an American. In America, assimilation is the needed concept. All of us, from whatever background working together to be Americans in the American culture.

The rise of humanity above the basal rhythms of nature hails from multiculturalism. Early man began bumping into each other long ago and traded flint. Different cultures learned from each other and eventually teamed up to kill off the giant predators, like nine-foot tall sabre-toothed tigers in Europe, and finally removed our species from the food chain. Wherever clans and tribes and nations met in trade and nomadic encounters, they shared their knowledge and learned from each other. Great libraries of stone tablets and then scrolls arose. People traveled from afar to study those writings and took that collective knowledge back to their own cultures. Soldiers who traveled to other lands return to their homes with broader minds. For example, soldiers during WWII came back to the U.S. and, having seen the success and rise of blacks in other lands, made way and stepped aside for the Civil Rights movement here. The U.S. rose to be the greatest nation in the world due to the Melting Pot of dozens of cultures and collective "know-how" that sparked the Industrial Revolution here. The famous "American Know-How" and ingenuity were created out of the broadening of minds and pluralistic sophistication. ALL progress hails from multiculturalism.

It depends on how much it's accepted by the nation. If many cultures exist in one nation and everyone keeps to their own culture, then it's really hard to establish a sense of national unity.
If everyone is willing to respect and acknowledge each other's cultures (although not necessarily embrace them) then it's possible to form a national identity that is based on openness and tolerance. And there are very few countries more united that the ones who embrace openness and tolerance as part of their identity.
