On some versions of the operating system, it acts as a drag lock: Put the cursor some place with the arrow keys, then push F8 (and release), then move the cursor with the arrow, pgup, home, etc., keys and all the text between the original position and location will be highlighted for copying, cutting, etc. Push F8 again to turn it off. Useful for people with one hand functional.

Holding down F8 while the computer is starting up will allow you to access the computer in Safe Mode.

F8 can have whatever function a programmer wants it to have. The BIOS system sees it as a flag to stop the boot process allowing you to boot into safe mode for debugging.

It has a different function in each program. Go to different programs and press it. You'll see they all do different things.
