I have to say koi, too. They are very smart, curious, personable, gentle yet energetic fish that come in a huge variety of scale and fin types and colors - I even have one in shades of pale blue! Each koi has it's own personality - they are almost human-like that way. They easily live 20-, 30-, even 50-plus years. There are even anecdotal stories about some koi fish being on their third generation of caretakers, living to be around 150-200 years old!! If I could have only one fish, it would be a koi.
They really do need to be in a pond, though - I have successfully kept koi (4-6") in two's and three's in a 75-gallon tank, but you really can't do this for more than a year. They just get too big.

There is no true way of knowing because some fish are supposed to be peaceful, but can end up not liking thier tankmates and fight them. Thats what happened with me. Just read up on a fish that you think you may like and a fish store will usually be able to tell you whether or not its a good or hard fish to keep. Ask the people there what thier favorite fish is and why. Hope i could be of some help.. after all its your choice. - Also what some people suggest are fish that get large like Plecos, Silver Dollars, Tangs, Goldfish. My favorite are Flame Tetras they are little and only get to 1.5" I have them in with Black Skirt Tetras 2".

Yo-yo Loaches! They are colorful (appearance and character), peaceful, active, and interact with all the other tankmates and their owner. They may cause stress on other fish like Bettas, Angels, and Discus however, so should be avoided in those cases. In a group of 5+, they play a constant, harmless (no nipping involved) game of tag. A group may even be okay with smaller South American Cichlids. Good luck!
