There's nothing wrong with Excalibur, no bugs or crazy things happen there and you CAN get a room there for around your asking price. However, you'd have to be willing to stay during the week. August 6-9 and 20-23 is $61 a night. August 30 -31 is $51 a night. September 3-4 is also $51 a night.

The Tropicana is another option, again if you'd like to stay during the week. You can get a room for $39-45. It's an older hotel, but defintely not one to pass up, I've stayed at both of these hotels and they are better than some of the dumps off the strip.

The Stratosphere is also a great choice, although you'd have to rent a car or take a bus to get to the heart of the strip. They have a special right now for $31.99 per night from Aug. 19-23. You can't beat that price for a room anywhere.

Don't listen to all these people with their rude comments. You can find a fine room that's clean and no bugs if you look around and are willing to stay on odd days. I've stayed during the week before and it's not bad at all - definitely not as crowded!

There is a travelodge on the south strip across from NYNY. It aint's the ritz (it's a modest motel) but it's a place to lay your head for 50 bucks.
http://www.travelodge.com/Travelodge/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=08797&brandInfo=TL&cid=%EAid!
My other suggestions are off-strip. There's a Super Eight Motel behind Bally's. A Terribles Casino and Hotel beside it. Both tend to have cheaper rooms.
Maybe look into the IP they occassionally have rock bottom hotel rates.
Otherwise, there are plenty of options downtown for under 50 and the deuce is only 5 buck for a 24 hour pass.
Have fun.

One time, against my better judgement, I stayed at a hotel right off the vegas strip for pretty cheap. It was at an America's Best Value Inn. The rooms weren't horrible, but they weren't 5 star by any means! They were very close to the strip but not actually on the strip. Check it out, but be sure you don't walk alone at night. The area is kinda scarey!

I stayed at the Hooter's hotel which is right across the street from MGM Grand, behind the Tropicana for $42 during the weekday. Not sure the cost on the weekends. Easy walk to New York, New York, Luxor, and the MGM Grand. It was a nice hotel, older hotel converted with a tropical theme. Rooms were decent.

I don't think that you can get a room on the strip at this time of year and even on ordinary days. You have to pay more coz you're on the strip... That's what you're paying for! If you want 50 max, go to off strip cheap hotels/motels.

You can go to the Stratosphere Tower Casino. It has the tallest free standing observation tower in the US ( It's 2x as tall as the Seattle Space Needle) and it's only like 40 dollars a night on weekdays.

If you travel during the weekdays, sometimes you might be lucky if you book online and find something within the range of $50. If not, just a block or two of the strip would be another choice and it would not be as bad or far as you think.

Maybe try Circus Circus, Riviera or Stratosphere. They're not the greatest but who cares? Nobody really hangs out in their room. All you do is sleep, shower, and then leave. Also, for 5 bucks a day you can ride the bus(The Duece) anywhere up and down the strip.

Your not going to find one on the strip. However there are several just off the strip. Not to far. Also downtown. Fremont street is nice now and a lot of fun.
