It wouldn't let me download the file before it closes. When the download box opens and I choose where to save it, everything will suddenly disappear back to the main screen :(

It is one of the options in Firefox, you can turn that off. Its a security setting to prevent downloaded files from taking over your computer.

because you have told it to do just that after a download, go into preferences and change the settings , read the help files on how to set it up, for security
