It's a weird story. Basically, they left their kids (3 year old and 2 x 18 month olds) in an unlocked apartment with no security (alarms, CCTV cameras, nothing), every night while they went out to dinner/drinks with their adult friends. On the fourth night, one of their kids mysteriously disappeared. Instead of looking for her, they hired a PR firm and some lawyers. And they refuse to go home after nearly 3 months, despite the fact they have these other kids.
From everything I've heard and read, this is one of those couples who had "designer" babies but never spent any time with them. Their family members say they had a full-time nanny at home but we don't know her name or truly whether she ever existed. I think it would be good to find this nanny, if there was one, to get the scoop on the parents.
Obviously, the media has been treating the parents with kid gloves because of the sensitivity of the matter. But the parents have acted rather differently than anyone has ever seen parents act before. They have become self-styled celebrities, with the father spending all his time on his blog (most of which is about his daily routine - how he's beaten his own personal best in his morning runs - stuff like that) and she appears to spend most of her time jogging or in church. At first I didn't doubt their sincerity, even if I thought it might be a little naive to think that too much publicity was a good thing (fear that the more high profile the victim, the bigger the chance that the abductors would kill the child and dump the body), but as this has gone on it has become like sick reality TV. It's not even about the little girl anymore. It's about the parents - what they are wearing, all the exotic places they are travelling. What's sicker is, they seem to be absolutely loving the limelight. Sickest of all - while they are out jogging, meeting Popes and Presidents and doing press conferences, their 20-month-old twins are left behind with babysitters. For days on end.
For people in the UK who have followed the McCann story from Day One, it is frustrating that the only questioning comes from blogs. The ever-critical UK press appears to be censured. I applaud the American networks for asking some tough questions, as one reporter in Germany did last month. It may seem insensitive, but there are too many gaping holes in the McCanns' story. And let's face it - they did abandon all three of their children repeatedly. If they did the same thing in any state of the U.S., they would be in jail instead of back-slapping with the US Attorney General (who I imagine must be a little embarrassed by having to meet with this nobody child abandoner Gerry McCann in the first place).

I haven't heard that, but I've heard other things. For one
thing, the parents may know more than they are letting
on. Much of what they say seems to be a cover-up.
