In most places in Kerala, you will find reasonably priced accommodation available on offer to travellers: there are high-end lodging places as well! You have to look around a bit, or, take help from some reliable friend, to locate the place suitable for your tastes and pocket! What one might recommend is, stay in places like Thrissur, suburbs of Kochi, or, Kozhikode (Calicut), or Palakkad (a warm place weathervise!), or Kottayam, and based in such central, but not so-costly places, explore the God's own country, Kerala! Cheap modes of transportation are available, they are not bad at all! (Surely, there are friends on this 'net' who could help you out with more information if required, when needed!)
