Taken from madsci.com:
How long human sperm can live outside the human body depends on several things: temperature and humidity among them. At room temperature (75 °F or 25 °C) without dehydration the sperm can live between 4 and 6 hours. Dehydration means, without drying out. After all, the semen (viscous, whitish secretion of the male reproductive organs, containing spermatozoa and serving as their transporting medium) is over 85% water. So then if the semen loses water (dehydration) this material begins to crystallize; all the while the sperm cells also undergo water loss. Therefore, in ordinary dry air at room temperature when dehydration is an added factor, human sperm can live maybe 1 to 3 hours. That's about all.

Sperm, not semen. They're two separate things. Sperm cells can stay "alive" as long they're warm and wet, like still swimming in fresh semen. When the semen dries out (not just the second it's exposed to air), the sperm cells die. As long as you keep the semen from drying out, the sperm cells will survive up to their usual life expectancy of about three days, or indefinitely if you flash freeze the semen. Left in the open air, especially if on something absorbent like clothes, semen dries out after a few minutes. You won't get pregnant if your boyfriend masturbates and ejaculates into a handkerchief and then an hour later you stuff the handkerchief into your vagina. But you may if he ejaculates into your pubic hair (pretty common practice) and the semen runs down into your vaginal opening. If it flows, it's viable. Make sense?

I have never heard this of phenomenom. I did not think you could kill those things. They die of old age (which in sperm years is like 3 days) or something like that. I'm no sperm expert, so I really don't know much about it.

those samples are taken into special cups with lids put on them and then frozen for future use, there are special measures taken in those cases to keep the sperm alive.
other wise in normal non clinic conditions sperm does begin to die once it hits the air.
once they hit the air they become compromised. i cant believe how seriously uninformed you people are

sperm does not die once it hits the air. It can survive for quite a while.
