yeah maybe a stalker or they wanna use the info for other illegal endeavors. pretty much your gonna have to wait it out, and see, then report it to the proper authorites when the time arises, if one arises.
look out for stranger's you dn't know calling you by name in the street's or lurking around your home. this doesn't mean get all paranoid just be aware of your surroundings.

now for the scolding.

never ever to anyone under any circumstances give out any info what so ever on the internet unless your doing some sort of online banking or bill paying, also these companies will never ask you for info because they already have it. if asked say no, or close the page. report it to the company you that you encountered the request for info from.

Nikki, don't panic! What type of information did this person get by accessing your friends MSN account? Is it really just your IP Adress? If so, that is nothing to be concerned about as IP Addresses used to browse and send email are public anyway.

If somebody got personal information you will need to take some steps to protect yourself. If they got such information as your real name, home address, phone number, bank account and/or social security numbers, you will need to contact the proper people to inform them of this. If they got your back account number go to your bank and notify them and ask what the best course of action would be. I would close that account(s) and then reopen different one(s). If they got your social security number you will need to contact all three major credit reporting agencies and put a red flag on your accounts with them. This way if any credit line or purchases with attempts to obtain credit in your name will first be checked out with you. Also, if they got your phone number then contact your phone company and report that somebody may try to open another phone number in your name and for them to put an alert on your account in order to avoid this happening.

Then contact your local police department and ask how to report theft of your personal information and possible fraud. They will know which official office to contact in order to reduce your chance of being victimized as a person whos identity was stolen.

Whatever you do don't panic. There are ways for you to protect yourself and these I have outlined will offer good protection to start. By being aware this happened you have power. Just think how bad it could be if you were unaware your information were stolen! At least you have a warning and a heads up on what could occur and can now take pre-emptive strikes to take care of yourself. So many people never get this level of advance warning and next thing they know their credit is not only ruined but they find themselves in debt for items they never purchased.

If it is only your IP Address which was taken you don't have anything to worry about at all, as IP Addresses are public anyway. Just be sure to have a good solid Internet Security Suite and you will be fine.

While there are many freeware programs out there they are really not all that free. Freeware often places unwanted software on your system and these software programs can be Spyware. By purchasing an inexpensive but good Anti-Virus program and using the Widows Firewall you will safeguaard your computer.

However, if you just don't have the income to purchase a solution then go with the free ones as these are better than nothing at all. Here are a couple of webistes to check out:

http://www.avast.com/eng/free_software.html

http://www.cnet.com/downloads

The first is to a program of its own, the second is a website where you can review several free versions or inexpensive shareware versions. Just pop in anti-virus in the search box at the top of the page, hit enter and a page with links to several programs will appear. Just click on each one and read about it and the customer reviews. Reviews are great for finding out what others think of a program. It helps make a good choice.

*note* be sure which Anti)Virus and Firewall program you wish to use and then stick to it as these types of programs are difficult to fully remove after installation. It is difficult to know when they are fully removed and if you then install another version you can create an instability in your OS, and cause the new version to not be able to fully carry out it functions. So, just do your homework and decide which you wish to use and stay with that one. You can use as many Spyware programs as you wish.

Good luck and have a great day.
