Never tried to build one myself but here are quite a few links that should point you in the right direction.

In my job I have helped hundreds of people design and construct ponds at all shapes and sizes. One thing I have learned is that each and every pond if different. The excat location of the pond will determine many things about shape, shallow areas, deeps areas, type of filtration, etc, etc...

I wouldn't trust any preprinted set of plans to provide the best pond for your situation. Instead, contact a local store that specializes in ponds and have them come to your location and see the site then draw plans for your pond. If they are unwilling, don't shop there. If they do it for free, don't use them, you get what you pay for so be willing to pay a reasonable fee for an expert to design your pond, you would for a house or landscaping, right? Be sure to explain that it would potentially be for cichlids and as them if they feel comfortable designing a pond that will keep cichlids year around. If not that's fine, find one that is. A local college with an aquaculture program would be a great resource. Maybe the professor could make your pond design a class project! Top of the line design for free since they as a school can't charge you!

Hope that helps and best of luck with the plans

I agree. Lowes and Home Depot have a rack of all sorts of do-it-yourself books put out by Sunset Gardens, etc. Cichlids will need a heated pond unless it is in the sun all year around.

They also have pretty good books at Lowes and Home Depot. They have a couple that are specifically focused on that topic, I think.
