I have a button thats similiar to a door bell thats inside my garage. I used to just have to press it in (like ringing a door bell) and the garage door would either open completely or shut completely. Now, if I just press it, it begins to shut for about 1/2 second that re-opens again.

The only way I can shut the door is by HOLDING the button in until the door completely shuts.

What happened all of a sudden?

I'm thinking its just time to change the swtich / button (the thing that looks like a doorbell)

Any thoughts or ideas?

look towards the floor of your garage door - are there camera looking things next to the rails? If so, then make sure the lens is clean and nothing is obstructing the imaginary line. This is a safety precaution so that kids, pets and valuables don't get squished by a closing garage door. At least once a week I need to adjust mine because one of the kids hits it or the garbage can is blocking it. Good luck!

The opener needs adjusting. At the opener motor unit, somewhere there should be 2 screws. One sets the pressure for opening, the other for closing.
It needs to be turned up for closing, as it's set too low and senses that it has hit an obstruction.
USUALLY there are arrow next to the screws to show which direction ups the force.
Holding the button on the wall down overrides the system, allowing it to close.

Make sure the safety sensors are clear on the door when you hit the button.
Then I'd start with the easy one and replace the switch first.
If neither of these work it may be time to get a new opener.

Had the same thing happen. Our landlord replaced our garage door opener. He said the motor was going out and it was fairly old.
