I have a 300 GB hard drive I want to add to a Compaq Presario 3800. When I open up the computer, there seem to be wires for additional hard drives. Wanting to see if the drive would even be accessible, I plugged it into my external drive... The computer recognized it. However, it only recognized the drive as being 128 GB rather than the full 300. Why? I vaguely remember being told I would have to purchase some sort of card to allow full capacity recognition of the drive. If true, what card do I need to fit my computer?

Also, what wires, etc. do I need to purchase in order to install the drive into the computer internally?

Computer: Compaq Presario 3800, SR5110NX

I added RAM already. The question I am asking is simply how to get my additional hard drive to work....

you have not said what operating system your using,, so we will start from the beginning, DOS (Disk Operating System) only sees 128 gig of your 300 gig hard drive, that does not mean you can not use the rest,

what you need to do is partition your hard drive into 3 or 4 partitions

go to your hard drive manufactures website and download the hard drive utilities file and read me files on how to's that way you can do a low level format should you ever need to.
