Illegal downloads (especially movies & music)
File sharing
Hacks & cracks (password stealers, product key generators, and the like)
Sites with free screensavers, smileys, and games are not **guaranteed** to cause trouble, but they're definitely something to be careful with. Before you download anything, read ALL of the fine print. If there's anything in there that smells even remotely like a rat, don't download it and move on to another site.

Yes, porn sites are the worst of the lot, but just about any site can put stuff you don't wish onto your computer. If you browse the web for even one minute without a good Internet Security solution you can become infected with all sorts of malware.
Keep yourself safe with a good Anti-Virus solution and a Firewall, if possible both software and hardware. The hardware Firewall is easiest to obtain by purchasing a Router. Use only one Anti-Virus and Firewall at any time, but you can use multiple Spyware solutions. I prefer a Suite, and I pay for a three license solution.

The above answers are correct, but it's important to remember that legitimate sites can be hijacked and used to distribute "malware." Malware is a generic term for all kinds of bad software: viruses, worms, Trojans, etc.
Most legitimate sites respond quickly when they learn they've been hijacked, but for a period of time, they can be dangerous.

porn,crack,serials, <--- sites like those.
the one above said smileies, toolbars or what have you. that is not a trojan or a virus but infact is adware and you agree to that when you download and use the product they offer
the site alone does not infect your computer.
installing a file from them may come with sponsors, so if you go to one of them check for sponsors and when isnatlling, if you have the option to opt out or say no then do so.
