A major reform in Islamic politics...But that will NEVER happen...so the question is academic.

They think that by wearing a burqha they are somehow enjoying freedom.

That they are made to wear a burqha is somehow forgotten

Why do you worry about other nations! They have their own traditions, as we do! Though I do not agree with them, one can only use public opinion to alter their behaviour!

I think you need to take a look at the way we treated, and still do, all kinds of people over the years, from Indians to slaves, to Americans who were of Japanese ancestry, to women, who did not get the right to vote until Woodrow Wilson's 2ND term and during WW I! Today they STILL are not treated as equals in the workplace, though many are smarter and better educated than those who try and hold them back!

Sexism, racism, homophobics and others are alive and well on this site!

I would say we have enough to change in this country before we start bashing others!

You are really generalizing by lumping all Muslim nations together under one giant umbrella. That's a little like asking "what would it take for blacks to be treated better than crap in white nations". Yes, I know that many Muslim cultures tend to treat women poorly, but it's not necessarily the case everywhere and it's not always due to the religion itself (and I'm no fan of religions). For example, women in Turkey are much better off than those in Afghanistan.

Short answer: education, secularization, economic development.

Secularism for starters. Politcal system must be revamped, extending to a state's domestic institutions. Full citizenship rights for women and the right to be elected in public office. Some European states have quotas for women to be part of parliament/congress. The women's movement is best fueled by a rights-based approach.

You should look up what it took Ataturk to make Turkey modern. Brutal yes, effective-pretty much. Tunisia is very progressive by the way. Progressive Islamic movements would help although the trend is traditional Islamic revitalism in many states. Not all MENA countries are dominated by Islam. Many different ethnicities, languages, and religions are present.

it is very sad, the plight of these women who have no rights whatever. a patriarchal society who say they value them but only in that they are a possession. if they question or are considered to be defing the male head of their family, they are be killed, in fact it is the male's duty to do so.

there are several orgs that are trying to help them and i admire that. i remember in the 70's in college some women who married muslin men and they thought that they would be different and respect them since they were being educated here but it didn't work out that way for them.

"the painful truth" can be explored on the links i have listed below.

By preaching the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to these nations. Once the people of these nations are exposed to the truth of the love and acceptance of the One and True Living God, their hearts can be changed. They will then understand the worth of all human life, and that women should be treated with as much honor, respect, and dignity as men are.

Irshad Manji, a gay feminist muslim(who of course has numerous death threats out against her from her "religion of peace" brothers and sisters) says that the key is economic empowerment. Let them start little businesses, so they can then learn to read and learn about all the passages of the Qu'ran that praises women that have been covered up by the fundie mullahs. Once they realize what they're missing, they will start standing up to the men who force them into hijabs and such. That idea sounds good to me.

Well, you won't know the answer until you stop believing the crap you watch on TV about muslims and try alittle harder to find the truth.
Women in Islamic countries are actually treated alot better than in U.S.
If you don't believe it, try using any search engine to find the number of women who got raped last year in U.S, and compare it with the number of women who got raped in the Whole Islamic world.

Good luck finding the painful truth.

It is not going to happen. Muslim men feel that are more important than anyone in the world. Simple as that.
