Voldy and Harry passed out and went to that place between worlds. or at least their souls did. That was Voldy's wasted soul from all the killing and mutilating he did.
People will say it was the Horcrux bit, but Voldy never passed out when Harry destroyed the other Horcruxes. Voldy went with Harry and when Harry awoke, he was waking up too.

That thing was meant to represent the Voldemort soul chunk (the Horcrux) that had previously been attached to Harry's soul.
It was just a small part of a person, it was evil, it had been attached to Harry like a dependent, it had its own personality, it was now being abandoned, and it was dying. By giving it the form of a red, scaly, crying but getting quieter, struggling to breathe, discarded small baby-like thing, I think the author was illustrating all of those features.

Everyone seems to be assuming it's part of Voldermort's soul.
JKR Doesn't actually tell us whether or not it is, but it's a reasonable assumption.
However, if what is in the Kings Cross place harry (hence Harry+the bit of voldemort), what's Dumbledore doing there?
And if the bit of voldemort's soul died, why is it wriggling? Does it die before or after Potter decides to go on or back? HJK doesn't say.
Either she's invented a lot of rules, but not let us in on all of them, or she's taking liberties for the sake of the story, which is her perogative, since she wrote it and it's ficiton.

Yes, that child thing was the soul of Voldemort. A weak, small part of his soul that was inside Harry. You see, both Harry AND the soul DIED and were at KIng's Cross. BUT, Harry conquered death by his willingness to die (that's what conquers death, when you're not scared of it, you've conquered it) so he was given a choice to go back but Voldemort's soul did NOT conquer death so he was left there to die.
