I was told that once you go off the pill you should wait 2 months before you try to concieve. Why is that?

I was told it was because it can harm the baby. the baby can be born with birth defects. But it doesn' sound like that happens to most. Why do ppl say that it does when obviously it doesn't cuz some of the ppl that answered this question got pregnant while on the pill

Really it is fine to start trying as soon as you go off birth control. The only drawbacks are: you may not be able to accurately date the pregnancy because ovulation will probably be irregular the first few cycles, some doctors used to believe that the first egg released after stopping birth control would be poor quality but studies have found this to have no effect, and the third reason is that after supressing ovulation with the pill and then stopping it a woman is likely to release more than 1 egg for the first ovulation after the pill.

I am not even sure that it is a choice, it seems that most women have to wait at least 2 to 3 months before their cycle will get back to normal and because until that happen you will not be able to get pregnant
also maybe it is because it will take that long to get the pill out of your system

LOL...well my sister was pregnant two weeks after she went off the pill...Funny I never had to get off the pill. I was ON the pill both times I got pregnant. But it is problaby so that your body gets a chance to get used to the changes in hormones.

Studies showed that there's a higher chance of twins if you get pregnant in the first three months after going off the pill, actually a higher percentage of boy/girl twins.

And yes, it happened to me.

You don't really have to but waiting for 2 months helps your natural cycle resume normalcy. When on the pill, the pill regulates your cycle artificially. Waiting for a couple of normal (non-pill) cycles will help you know when you ovulate and when you get your actual period.

Good luck.

i'm no doctor or anything, but i believe the pill works by giving your body the hormonal illusion of being pregnant. you can't get pregnant while pregnant afterall.

just like it takes a month or so for the pill to really start working, you need to wait for your hormones to get back to normal.

I don't know about 2 months, but it's recommended to wait at least one full month off of bc so your body can adjust back to it's normal schedule, and get your period naturally. One practical reason being, so you'll know when you're period's supposed to be, so if you miss it, you know!
I'm sure it's not a requirement. Lots of people get pregnant right after...that first month.

One reason is to clear any of the old medicine out of your system. It's best to have all meds out of your system, your new baby doesn't need that. Another is that your body is in the old rhythm, and it takes a while for it to get back into the correct rhythm.

You can start trying right away if you want, but your body may take a couple of months off BC before your hormone levels are stable.
