While sleeping on your side (especially the left side) is most commonly recommended, you can also sleep safely on your stomach. Questions about sleep safety during pregnancy generally revolve around optimal blood flow and nutrient supply to the placenta and the fetus. A main concern is the weight of your enlarging uterus pushing down directly on the large veins that return blood to your heart. The most notable effects can occur when women lie flat on their back. If you experience such problems as shortness of breath or heartburn, especially in the third trimester, propping yourself up with pillows may be helpful. Remember: Comfort is important, too!

The reason you are not supposed to lay flat on your back late in pregnancy is the extra weight of the baby put pressure on the vena cava (sp?), which is a main artery, and restricts blood flow to the baby.

As your baby gets bigger, there's more pressure on the your major blood vessel in your back which, I've noticed, can cause back and hip pain, and leg cramps in the middle of the night. I did learn a little trick though. If you want to at least try to lay on your back, put a pillow under one side of your back that way there's not as much pressure being put on your back. It works for me!

First of all, it's not that bad, just better to lie on your side.
This is due mainly for the weight of the baby pressing on internal organs and intestines. If the baby is pressing too hard it may cut off the blood circulation to vital organs or strangulate the peristalsis of the bowels.

It's not that it's bad, it's just extremely uncomfortable in late pregnancy. It's just not comfortable to lie on top of the baby like that if you;re on your tummy, and lying on your back is not comfortable because your hip bones will get loose and cause pain when you lie flat on them.

Because it puts pressure on one of the major arteries bring oxygen and fluids to your baby. It more or less smushes it. If you lay on your left side, it allows this area to open up wider, increasing the movement.

Because it puts pressure on your lower back and can cause pain also puts pressure on the two major arteries that carry blood to your baby

Hi. I dont really think it is considered "bad" but I do know that when you sleep on your side during prenancy that it increases blood flow to the placenta. But alone from being uncomfortable, I dont think it would hurt the baby.
