Well you wouldn't find one on it's own in the water would you, so I'd say that they are sociable creatures who thrive on the company of other fish

Well, scientists will tell you that fish don’t have the brain capacity to be lonely, but no one, neither scientists nor laypersons will ever be able to prove either way, as we can’t speak with them to find out what they feel. That said, however, over many years of fishkeeping, I have witnessed various fish living with various other fish as well as alone, and I truly do believe that goldfish are one of the most sociable fish. They love playing with a companion; bumping and rubbing noses and swimming side-by-side, literally touching bodies as they swim. What does this mean? Who knows. Maybe it’s loneliness, maybe it’s just a trait that we identify with a need for companionship. But, the fact remains, that when I have had solitary goldfish, they act very listless and “lonely.” I would suggest that you get a playmate for your goldfish, but your 35 liter tank is far too small for two goldfish and at some point in time, you will even need to get a larger tank for the one goldfish you have now if you take care of it properly and it grows to a large size.

I have 12 eight inch adult goldfish in my pond and about 20 three inch babies they've produced since March (when they were three inchs).

These fish school around together all day with my 5 Koi. They all recognize me when I walk by - and swim over to me to see if I'm going to feed them their food. If not, they'll swim away, but keep an eye on me.

I know that they're happy fish when they all swim together in a school like that, because happy fish do that. Sick fish on the other hand won't swim together - they'll stay solitary and hide.

So, yes, Goldfish do get lonely. Definitely.

And Goldfish have memories - they remember me - they know it's me when I walk by their pond. They know it's me that feeds them. When a stranger walks by the pond, they swim away - they recognize that they're a stranger.

Goldfish are smart - and should have company.

I would not keep less than four together.

No goldfish are in basic terms great on their own. He/she would be in a position to relish extra suitable water high quality extra suitable than including yet another fish to pollute the water. additionally, many people say that 10 gallons is great for goldfish, yet because of fact of their length and waste quantity, they actually want a minimum of 30 gallons according to fish with outstanding filtration. Even that, IMO, isn't adequate. undergo in recommendations that goldfish get a minimum of 6 inches, whilst maximum get around 12 inches.

Don't listen to idiots who claim fish have 8 second memories, that is just ridiculous and has been disproven. My fish recognize me, and they remember things about when its time to eat etc. Anyway, goldfish are happier in groups, but you need 10 gallons per fishy at least. Good luck!

Goldfish are extremely social fish that prefer the company of their own species. Unfortunately, they get more than a foot long, so a 35 liter tank is just killing them. Don't get any more Goldfish until you can provide them with an acceptable home.

Edit: Goldfish have quite advanced memories that can be proven by their associating between humans and food. When Goldfish see humans, they get excited because they think they are getting fed. Association=Memory
