Go to this website to review different free Anti-Virus software programs:
http://www.cnet.com/downloads
At the upper right of the screen is a search box. Put in anti-virus and a page with several different programs will appear. Scroll on down the page and click on each one and then read the customer reviews.
Here is the link for the free Avast Anti-Virus program for home use:

*note* make sure you review which version you think most fits your needs. Removal of this type of software is difficult at best and nearly impossible at worst. If you fail to fully remove a Vendors solution and then install another Vendors solution you can create an unstable system in which the program is not able to properly do it functions of protecting your system, and at worst it can crash your system. It is often visually difficult to know if the software has been fully removed. It will no longer appear in the list of Add/Remove programs but fragments and orphaned files can and do cause instability and other serious issues. So, please do your research, decide on a solution, and then stick with it. You can add and remove Anti-Spyware/malware programs easily, and have multiple versions installed at one time. It is important to only have one Firewall and Anti-Virus program installed at any one time.
*note* It is well worth the small price of a stand alone Anti-Virus solution for home use. It is true that you can obtain a "free" solution, but nothing is really for "free". So called Freeware or Shareware programs always has a catch, usually installs other unwanted programs along with it, so be very carefull while installing to uncheck boxes which will install other software. Also, be sure to really do your homework, read the privacy policy of any website you download from or give your email or other personal information to that they don't sell, rent or give it to others. In addition to reading the privacy policy posted on the website look at the policy reports avaiable via your IE browser. You can do this by clicking on the Page icon in IE7, scroll to the bottom and click on "Webpage Privacy Policy". Also, make sure any site you put your personal information into is secured with an https, and sports a lock icon, rather than a normal http site. the "s" tells you the site is encrypted.

I disagree with the principle. I have never encountered a free virus, spy or adware program that did not itself put spyware and adware into your computer.
If you really care, the thirty bucks or so you spend on a standalone box of Trend Micro or some such is completely worthwhile. Without exception I will tell you, when you think you are getting something for free online, there is some kind of catch. In the case of protection software: if you got it free, it is a trojan horse.
Stop being cheap. Nothing really costs so much out there.

avg free is very good. so are mcafee free, spybot, adaware se, and any number of other freeware/free versions for personal use. with the prevalence of virus and trojan problems, almost all software conmpanies have some free anti-virus downloads available. i've used avg for a long time and it works just fine, and is configurable to just monitor or scan daily at a set time. (other functions can't be changed without the full version). you can jsut scan, or get a download from many places such as microsoft, avg, mcafee, symantec (norton), etc. yahoo has a norton scan on the toolbar or drop down menu as well.

The best free combination is:
1) AVG Antivirus (the free version). (virus scan and removal).
2) ZoneAlram Firewall. (internet protection).
3) Ad-Aware 2007. (spyware removal).

Google offers a nice, free pack of software that includes both an antivirus and an antispyware scanner. I had good luck cleaning up my computer and bringing it back to life using these tools. Plus, you can trust it since it comes from Google and not some no-name software company.
You can get the Google Pack here:

Good luck!

AVG - use myself. Avast is good as well.
Install at least two good anti-spyware programs as well - Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster, Super Anti-Spyware. These are all free downloads - Google for them.

AVG and Avast are both total JUNK. I use active virus shield. It is by far the best free antivirus program you will ever use.
