which is better overall when it comes to desktops: dell or compaq?

Being someone who has had two compaq computers that have caused a lot of trouble and having a brother that has a dell he has no trouble with i would venture to say Dude you're gettin a dell!

Dell for sure. I install probably 100 a year and so far average about a 2% component failure rate. Quit using Compaq before they were bought by HP.

Dell, Compaq is all proprietary, meaning you can only use Compaq parts when replacing or upgrading, for more flexibility go with a Dell, you'll have more freedom when changing out parts.

Something to consider: Compaq is actually owned by HP. HP has two lines: HP (good) Compaq (bad). So I would say dell or look at HP.

you only get what you pay for, and looking at the your reply comments, none know what they are talking about.

first of all getting down to the nitty gritty Dell, hp, compaq, gateway. e-machines, are box movers, meaning they make the cheapest computers out of the cheapest components,

my advice to you is go to a local computer shop ( not supper store) and get them to build you one, to your own speck, you will get a better service and a better system, and you can always take it back your self. rather than send it back to the manufactures, should anything go wrong with it.

and to keep the cost down even more install Ubuntu Linux on the system for free,, it is better and more secure than windows Vista...
