I have an 8 week old who I've been exclusively breastfeeding. Recently, past 2 days, I've noticed that while nursing my son seems very figity. He's always moving back and forth, turning his head and pulling at my nipple a lot. He has a good latch, his mouth is around almost the whole areola and his lips are curled out. I thought that it might have been because my milk wasn't coming but when I pull him off to check my milk is literally squirting out. What could be the problem? He doesn't seem to have gas or anything like that. Has anyone experienced this before? Could it be that the flow is too fast for him and he needs time to catch up with himself?

It's not that he wants to look around because most of the time when he's nursing his eyes are closed. He's a very sleepy nurser

Sounds like he's just trying to adjust himself to the fast flow of your milk. You might be one of the women I consider lucky b/c you could have overactive letdown. I have such a hard time with letdown. I'm currently breastfeeding my 7 month old daughter.
I suggest that instead of asking us on here, you call a lactation consultant and ask them.
Also, check out these websites. They have been very helpful to me throughout this whole breastfeeding process.

Yes to the last question. There are a few different things to do
* you can express a little to get the first "shots" out
* you can vary positions, like laying down and putting him on top of you so gravity helps the let down be a little gentler
* nursing more freqently helps with keeping breasts from getting too full

here's lots more info on forceful letdown & ways to help it:

It does sound like he is bothered by fast let down.

Express some first, or nurse lying back with baby laying on top of you so gravity holds some of it back!

Do persevere - in 4 weeks or so, your supply should be settled down fine and this shouldn't be so much of a problem.

Yes, it could be the flow is too fast for him. You might try expressing a little bit before getting him latched on. I loved my Avent hand pump for that -- cheap and efficient!
