A large LARGE roach was in my house yesterday, about the size of a cellphone, with very large antennae. I used bug spray and sprayed him till he died...

Does that mean there are a bunch more?
Where did he come from?
Is it because the people upstairs from where I live was vacant for a while?

I am having serious PTSD over this.....help?

They come up from your drains. Try to keep your drains plugged when you're not using them, you'll see a difference. I'm in AZ, we call them sewer roaches. I used to see them in my home....flying no less above me when I was sleeping. I keep my drains plugged now.

I know how you feel, I recently moved into a condo, and we have big roaches mainly outside. I have seen about 5 or 6 roaches in the house, and these suckers are big. I totally stress out over it. (I think I need to see a pyschologist to get over this fear) I am definately going to put drain covers in my kitchen sink. Cause that is where I have seen all my roaches.
(thanks to whoever it was, that suggested that)

Try this, spray a thick line of bug spray inside and outside all doors coming into the house. Usually they wont cross that line.
Have you tried setting off foggers inside the house? They dont cost much, under $5. Foggers worked great in a house I lived in years ago.

I wish you the best of luck with your bug problem. Praying you dont see anymore...

if it has recently rained
then the roach is trying to escape from the water
and it is worse now because it is summer
the heat and the water drive the roach inside
or maybe the people from upstairs had it packed away in a box by accident and it got loose
but it mainly depends on the weather
you should get some roach hotels
they can easily be taped in place and used
the roaches get attracted and die somehow
i have them here at my house and i haven't seen a roach in over a year

I think it's a matter of appearances/perception. To have a clean home requires organization and house cleaning. It's possible they are really well organized and that they don't mess it up much in the first place through certain habits, but they'll still have to contend with dust and dishwashing etc. If others have a good routine and everyone in their household is onboard with a certain way to organize in terms of how things are used, placed and who cleans what when, then it seems like they do no housework because it's not being done when you're around. P.S. If there is any one person in a household who does not do housework, chances are they will create a constant stream of mess behind them because they don't understand/appreciate the effects of their habits. It's best if everyone rotates cleaning chores so that everyone appreciates the concept of clean carpet, clean entryway, clean dishes and countertops etc. Otherwise it's very hard to keep a place clean. (IE, my place with my zero housework room-mate)

I live in CA too and no matter how clean you keep the house they will get in if they can.
Make sure that there are no openings around the pipes that come into the house under the sink. If so, then use an expanding caulking to fill them. They need water so under your sinks is the best place for them to find entrance.
I found out that hair spray can kill them too! I ran out of cockroach spray so I sprayed it with what I had on hand!
Good luck.

What you most likely had in your house was a water bug. They look like very large roaches. I'd see one from time to time in the warmer months when I lived in an apartment building. The best way to avoid them is by keeping stoppers in the drain holes during the summer months.

My living quarters are always clean, and once in a blue moon I see a cockroach just standing on the wall. So I have no problem killing it. If you have fast moving roaches, it could be a sign of a dirty house. The ones that just sit probably came from a suitcase or just "strolled" in from somewhere else. After a good rain, roaches seek shelter anywhere they can--but temporarily if they don't get spotted and killed. Not long after they discover they are in a clean dwelling, they will "high-tail" it somewhere else.

Well, I live in Georgia and we have those big black cadillacs too. But they hang out on the sidewalks and stuff. They occasionally do come inside. I dont know if it is for shelter or if they just find their way in. But it is not because your house is nasty or anything. There may be something attracting them in the place upstairs from your place and one just found a way into your place. If it makes you feel better have an exterminator come to your place and spray.

I hear ya on the PTSD thing!!! Any kind of Roachs scare me!!! I can't handle them! Before I got married, when I lived at home, we used to have those big flying water bugs. (flying roaches) Thankfully, since Ive gotten married, I have not had any in many, many years in any place I've lived! Even typing the word Roach gives me goose bumps and I feel like I have something crawling on me! YUCK! I can't stand those things!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wow that could of been a record roach, keep it and freez it . Well if yo have been getting alot of rain then you can expect those critters to find there way in from outside they are usually outiders and they tend to try to keep dry. dont worry about it just spray around your house. they really like the outdoors better/.

THE SIZE OF A CELL PHONE? Now that's a big roach. It sounds like a stray from somewhere else but spray just to be sure.

You don't want that size of roach in your home.......... yuck!
