I took it that it was the fact that when Malfoy was disarmed he was the rightful owner of the Elder Wand. Although Malfoy wasn't using it, he was defeated by Harry which gave Harry masterhood over any wand owned by Malfoy.

Regardless of the wand that Malfoy had when Harry defeated him, the Elder Wand still belonged to Draco. Harry could use the Malfoy's original wand, but also he had conquered him so thus the elder wand became Harry's.
Malfoy didn't kill Dumbledore but he still won the wand.
You lose the Wand when you lose to an opponent regardless of whether you have the wand in your hands or are attacked by them. Simple really

Even though the Elder Wand itself didn't change hands, the ownership or the Master of it changed with these events. Malfoy disarmed Dumbledore, making him the rightful master, then when Harry disarmed Malfoy, he became the rightful Master of it, because the ownership changes when someone defeats the supposedly undefeatable Master of the Elder Wand. The wand just knew who the rightful master was even though neither Harry nor Malfoy had ever had it.

I think its just the act of Mastering anothers wand in general. Malfoy was the master of the wand, however when he was bested byHarry (no matter what wand he physically took) the point is Harry dominated Malfoy so was therefore in control.
I think its a bit of a loose tie in but since nothing like this wand has existed before and the rules governing such things are not clearly defined i think there is some wiggle room in the logic.

Malfoy disarmed him but they interred Dumbledore with his wand. And the wand didn't work for Voldemort, perhaps because he'd taken it in a cowardly way, from a dead man, or perhaps because the wand chooses the wizard. Since Harry had beaten Malfoy for his wand, even though he didn't have the Elder Wand on him at the time it was still rightfully Harry's. I think.

The Elder Wand casts its alleigance to whoever defeated its last owner. In Disarming Dumbledore, Malfoy initially defeated him, so the moment it happened, the wand thought 'My master is Malfoy now'. Then when Harry Disarms Malfoy in Malfoy Manor, he initially defeated him, and that was enough to own the Elder Wand. It didn't have to be the Elder Wand that was Disarmed, just its master. And yes, they probably would need a new wand, but in most cases in history, the previous owner of the wand wouldn't need one afterwards because they were killed as an easy defeat, and Grindelwald was in prison afterwards. But Malfoy does need to go back to Ollivander's.

Apparently as long as you have defeated the rightful owner of the wand, all wands belonging to the owner become yours.
So, Malfoy didn't have possession of the wand, Harry had the "rightful owner's" hawthorn wand, and the Elder Wand recognizes Harry. Besides, basically the Elder Wand chose Harry and not Voldemort. Voldemort never had to defeat anyone to earn it.

Malfoy disarmed Dumbledore but he didn't take the Elder Wand with him when he ran with Snape.
The Elder Wand was buried with Dumbledore, Voldermort stole it from the tomb.
Harry disarmed Draco, and took his wand from him.
The Elder Wand recognised this and as Harry was the last Peverell descendant, he was ' The true owner' of the wand, literally.
So the Avada Kedavra curse, rebounded off of the shield charm that Harry cast, with Draco's wand, as it recognised Harry,s touch as his 1 'true' owner left alive.

ok, voldemort had thought that snape would have been the master since he was the one who killed dumbledore, but since that was planned it was actually malfoy who became the master since he did partially conquer him. so now malfoy is the master, then when harry steals malfoy's original wand, that means he dominated malfoy's ownership of the elder wand. apparently you dont have to steal the wand itself, its more like you just dominate that person somehow and then its yours.
