The Zodiac Escutcheon can be found in two treasure chests, but they don't always spawn, and they don't always have the Escutcheon in them. Make sure you wear a Diamond Armlet when opening the chests, and you may want to save right before opening them in case you don't get the shield, so you can reset and try again. One chest is in the Great Crystal Upper layer. Here is a map showing the location:

Great Crystal
100% chance with the Diamond Armlet and only a 50% chance without the Diamond Armlet (might be Brave Suit). The chest is on a separate path that is behind Gate Capricorn II. Omega Mark XII is behind Gate Capricorn I, so you will need to rush back and activate the Gate Capricorn Stone twice if you want to get this shield and fight him. Barheim Passage
Equip Diamond Armlet. This chest is located in the West Annex of Barheim Passage which is right before Zalera, so take a look at the "Patient in the Estersand" side quest and the Zalera esper fight if you need guidance on how to get back in Barheim Passage after the first journey inside.

Go to the West Annex right after the Zeviah Span bridge. When your party first walks into the West Annex, pull up the map and look for the small path to the east that splits. Move up that path (it has four traps up it) and you will possibly find the chest containing this shield at the far south end of that path. This chest is actually a spawning place for two chests that appear together - you have to open one for the other to appear. The Zodiac Escutcheon will be in the first chest. A way to check and see if both chest are there (or the shield chest is there) is to move up next to the chest and see if the "Treasure" has trouble appearing. If the command doesn't appear that well while moving around the chest, then both chests or the single chest containing the shield are there!

The shield will be in the first chest when two are present, but that chest may appear by itself - the key is to watch and see if the "Treasure" command has trouble appearing since this signifies the shield chest is there. The Zodiac Escutcheon has about a 30% chance of appearing in the chest with the Diamond Armlet equipped. The shield chest has about a 90% chance of spawning each time before it is opened for the first time, but afterward, it will appear at a lower percentage - still not "Zodiac Spear in Henne Mines" bad though, so it is still worth a shot if you have already opened it. It seems to always appear by itself once it has been opened for the first time. Other than the shield, this chest will usually contain an X-Potion (w/Diamond Armlet), an Elixir (without Diamond Armlet), or the usual random gil. Save your game in the Terminus No. 7 Adjunct before you open the chests and keep trying! Yes, you can get more than one Escutcheon Shield here.

I think its in barhiem passage but the passage is blocked of so u have to do a side quest u have to go to the east bank village in the western sands (if u havent done that go to game faqs. com for more details on that quest)any ways then go into barhiem passage check your map for the pths you havent taken yet and then go that way eventually you will come across a bridge and ounce you cross the bridge you will come to the next section thingy stay to the left and then there will be a path leading up there will be a lot of traps so have float on and then you will find a chest now the chances of you getting it are very slim if you dont get it zone 3 zones awayand come back for it to respawn
