Buy a carpenter ant repellent like Raid and spray where they live and any areas that they can use to enter the house. Carpenter ants live in rotted and wet wood, so remove old stump, rotted wood piles, or similar places that they might live.

Sprinkle Garlic Powder all over where they live. It is toxic to ants and not to people or pets. also leave some garlic cloves in the tree and at the base. who cares if the kids eat them.

The hardware store has these spikes you put into the ground and it kills them.
We just did the same thing.
