to add to the answerer above. Missiles (provided there are no strong winds that include in the equation) are generally moving in a parabolic path. The concept of an intercepting missile is that the trajectory (path) of the two missiles will meet at a certain point at the same time. If you throw a ball at a certain angle, not vertical, the path is parabolic. A parabola is a graph of a quadratic function. ©

Sometimes, quadratics are used to model the path of a projectile. For example, when you throw a ball into the air, it goes up and comes back down following the general path of a parabola. Parabolas are what you get when you graph a quadratic.
