I have a 2000 Sunfire, at first it sounds like something in the trunk (I had a stroller in there) is thumping. But now it's empty, and still have the noise. Around 55mph is fine though. It shakes the car kinda too, like when you're driving down a highway and you've got all those regular 'bumps' in the road at regular intervals. But it's definitely my car with a problem. Any idea what it could be?

As already stated it sounds like a tire is out of balance.

You may also want to have them check your wheel bearing and brakes while at the tire store. They can just check to make sure the tire is solid before they unbolt it to check the bearing. The brakes will depend if its drum or disc brakes.

The tire seems most likely as it comes and goes with how fast you are going. The brakes or wheel bearing would be constant even at low speeds. Although it might be subtle to recognize at low speeds.

It could be a tire out of balance. Sometimes there is just a certain speed that will cause the tire to vibrate. Another possibility is that you've got something inside the tire like from a can of Fix-A-Flat. If you put that in the tire and then don't drive the tire enough for it harden it will flow to the bottom of the tire when it is at rest and harden into a big hard mess. Happened to me one time.

Have a good tire shop check the balance on your tires, sounds like you have a balance issue or a bad tire or rim.
