In every tank I've ever owned, I have always put at least one gold fish with a school of neons and I've never had any problems. However, I was just chided by Wal-mart's fish person for having them together in one tank. Is this really wrong and why? Please explain in detail. Also, will gold fish eat ghost shrimp? I've never had ghost shrimp and I just bought some thinking they would be safe from the gold fish. I've never had a gold fish that ate another fish in it's tank.

Oh, I though you should know that Currenly my tank has maintained at 75 degrees without the use of a heater. From my research I've found that this is an acceptable temp for tropical fresh water fish and gold fish. Is this correct?

While neons are labeled tropical fish and goldfish are labveled coldwater fish, that's a serious problem for most fishkeepers to over come. In fact, neons will do well in a general range from about 72F to 85F or higher. GOldfish do best around 68-75F but can tolerate temperatures far above and below that range. As you can see, even those fairly tight ranges over lap. Keep the tank in that over lap range and both fish are happy.
The entire "coldwater" vs" tropical" mess is so poorly understood that it's a shame and the problems it causes most aquarium keepers isa real shame.
In regards to temp, your fine, go ahead and keep them.
The gold fish may or may not eat the ghost shrimp, it's a real toss up. That depends greatly on your specific goldfish.

Okay well for one thing, the whole, "if you put them with any fish they'll fight." That's not true. It may apply some fish, like any long finned fish like Angels. And yes, they will fight if you put them with their own species unless if it's a female and both are ready to spawn. Since you've got Tetras, and Barbs, they will get along with them. I have a male Beta with Tetras, Barbs,Danios, Plecos, and Corydoras. The Barbs tend to be a bit nippy at them but mine just stopped after i let him in the tank with the other community fish. Yes, the Beta can eat the tropical flakes, too. I asked a pretty similar question about that. The Beta food is just higher in protein. But, do still give him some of his own food every now and again. You should get some bloodworms or brine shrimp for them. Give it every so often as a treat, plus, if your tetras might be a male and a female, the bloodworms will make the females pack full of more eggs. Beta fish aren't as aggressive as you think! They're a good addition to a nice and peaceful community tank. Hope this helped you!! =D

If your starting to think there is nothing you can keep with your goldfish, try bloodfin tetras, they can handle water from 64-84 and are big enough most goldfish won't eat them.
The ideal temp for Goldfish is like 68 from what I have read.
I am surprised your neons have avoided getting turned into goldfish snacks so far.

The problem with keeping Goldfish and Neons is that Neons are tropical fish (require warm water), but Goldfish are coldwater fish. By mixing the two, you are harming one of them. For once, the Walmart employee was correct. Goldfish may or may not eat Ghost Shrimp, it depends on each fish's personality. Ghost Shrimp are feeder shrimp that make nice pets. If you don't mind losing the shrimp, it is worth a try. Good luck!

Well, besides the temperature differences as mentioned before, goldfish are quite toxic to other types of fish. Their waste contains a LARGE amount of amonia. This throws off the Ph levels in the water and it is hard for other varieties of fish to survive in those conditions. It's important to have an all-goldie tank for that reason. Yes, it's really wrong b/c it's not fair to the other fish.
Yes, goldies will eat ghost shrimp. As a general rule goldies will not eat tiny fish, but I've seen them eat a ghost shrimp.

Sorry but hes right. Goldfish do best in water 65 -70 degrees. tropicals usually around 76-80 degrees ( some like it even warmer ie angel fish do best at 80-82 begrees). All fish have a slime coat which enables them to move through the water easily. Tropical fish and goldfish have diffrent type of slime coat the diffrent types of slime coats antagonize one another thus both fish end up with a loss of this slime and with out it they loose their defense against parasites and disease.
PS all fish like ghost shrimp if they have been fed shrimp type foods. however sometimes you get lucky
