What is Sox? i know both the red and white soxs use it, but does it mean anything? where did it come from?

The Red Sox were given their name in 1907 by the then owner, John Taylor, because they wore red socks as part of the uniform. It's been said that the word Sox was used as opposed to socks or stockings because it would more easily fit in a newspaper headline. It's possible that John Taylor was given that advice by his dad Charles, who was the publisher of the Boston Globe at the time.

It's just a shortened form of the word "Socks". In the early days of baseball, teams were usually known by the colors they wore on their uniforms - thus, you had the St. Louis Cardinals (contrary to popular belief, the name refers to the color Cardinal Red rather than the bird), the Chicago White Stockings, and so on. At some point, "Stockings" got shortened to "Socks" and then to "Sox".
