I'm Canadian, with relatives and friends in the U.S. Like many Canadians, I have a love-hate relationship with the U.S.

Many folks around the globe know there's a difference between a country's people and its government -- but many also wonder why you U.S. people keep electing such hurtful governments. And it's not just the politics: many U.S. people actually believe their culture is better anyone else's, which is both arrogant and ignorant.

I've lived and travelled all over Europe and in some of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. To be honest, yes, I've heard people in those countries fairly often say negative things about U.S. travellers. So they may well treat you differently than people from less belligerent nations.

By the way, your country's name is the United States OF AMERICA. America actually runs from the top of North America to the bottom of South America. And everybody south of the U.S. calls themselves "Americans." That you think of yourselves as the only Americans is typical U.S. arrogance.

A reminder: please don't take any of this personally. I'm sure you're really a pleasant woman, which is why you bothered to ask this question.

Well... the world view on people that most people have is based on the minority. Your behaviors and habits will all be assumed to be the same as those of the small group who either accentuate the classic stereotype or the crazed extremist. This is where the view of your president comes in. Because of his and the small group of people running your country, the actions of this minority represents the actions of your entire nation. Hence if a leader is hated, then so will the people they lead.

Its a sad and unfortunate truth that human beings, while being gifted with the largest brain:body ratio, are the smallest minded beings on this planet.

I m African, I like you guys. I always being treated kinder and with more respect by Am's than by people of other western countries. The sad fact is most my fellow Africans has been subjected by so much propaganda that they don't like you. I asked the people in the camp I'm in now (remote part of Zambia). All agree that the US developed HIV Aids, this is what people tell them. Imagine a loved one is dying and they believe it your fault.I can write you a book on examples like this.Open a newspaper in Africa or EU, u are blamed for everything ,this started long before jnr came to power.During the cold war some African journalists were educated in the USSR and they are still around.I read 2 reports by leading Kenya jour In the one he makes the argument "Debt relief is bad for Africa, yet the majority of US and its allies voted for that". In the next he claims debt relieve is good and points out that only the US voted against it.Boeing builds a plane that uses less fuel, my EU friends reply "yanks don't think now people will fly more and cause more pollution". Would they say the same if Airbus bring out a plane that uses less fuel. I have a lot more to say. We do have broadband via sat, don't ask "If you are in the bush (no pun intended) how come you have Internet?"

I'm an American and I live in Italy, and I have traveled all over the world. I have been treated with nothing but respect and have never been made to feel like I'm disliked or hated because I'm American.
The Italians have made our time here ( My husband is in the Military ) so wonderful. We've lived here for three years and now that we're getting ready to move back to the States, I realize how much I'm going to miss it here.
We traveled throughout Europe a lot while we were here. I also went with my husband a few times to Bahrain and Dubai, both countries are in the Middle East, and each country made us feel so welcome.

Some people do look down on americans. But I'm thinkin it's cuz of the government or leader mostly. Most american people seem to be ok, mostly just like us (Canadian).

But I know some places really don't like americans for lots of different reasons. Sometimes americans can be sorta arrogant and abrasive (mostly rich spoiled ones tho...and these travel more cuz they got more money to go places).

I am an America living in Shenyang China. Shenyang isn't a big tourist city even though it has the 5th largest population in China. Occasionally you will see foreigners around, but we are very few. I am a college teacher, and the students really have a high opinion of Americans. In fact, it's a little like being a miniature celebrity. Those that are interested in English really, really want to practice it.

No...I don't think we're looked down on per se but many Americans have behaved improperly and with a certain amount of self righteous arrogance so do be careful when traveling abroad. Try to remain reserved and be a good ambassador. We've created more than our share of strife.

The few Americans I know are always surprised they always walk around with there jaws open when they see how nice people are over here lol. But like most countries I think your government is extremely corrupt and the US Army is similar to that of a "world police." And what is up with the racial tension over there? You guys are moving backwards when it comes to racial relations.

I like them. Of course, since I am American, I'm a bit biased.

I've traveled a lot and have found that people around the globe tend to treat me well. I've been treated very well by non-Americans. Of course, it depends on how you treat them, too.

Well I am American and I've traveled. The Brits seemed fairly happy to have me. I think a lot of people have realized that the majority of the American people don't approve of our current government...
