i was wondering would strawberries will grow in mostly sand mixed with mulch and compost. or do they need complete soil or/and compost. i heard that grow can grow in sand i want to be sure before i start growing them.

Yes they are very hardy, Your soil should be sandy and well drained. mix compost in the soil will help feed them, I made a stair step planter with window boxes(5 steps high) and each years they get thicker and thicker. Just trim the dead stuff in the spring with scissors, also you don't have to bend over so much to pick them, We call them Yard Candy and the kids love them.

Acouple years ago when I installed my 12 by 6 foot garden bed, I purchased good compost soil that was made from a local sewer company. It was first time planting season than. Now over the years every autumn or so I put my grass clippings on top of them, I pour in the left over coffee grinds from my morning coffee, I pour in my left over tea bags, egg shells. And than I take the tiller after all my veggies are out of the garden and till it over. I need to make a bed just for my strawberries, as they grow rooters that you can replant. I already have six new plants . I think they are hardy plants.
However a good mixture of soil will do wonders.

most strawberries with soil and compost. but they will not live in the cold weather. unless they are wild strawberries. we have some of them in our yard and they come back every year...
