milliliter (mL)
The metric system is amazing. A milliliter, the actual unit of volume, is defined as a cube of a centimeter on each side. Furthermore, metric mass measurements are done in grams, and a gram is defined as the mass of 1 mL of water (there's probably a specific temperature and distillation state of the water to keep it uniform, but I don't know those off the top of my head).

A milliliter is a unit of volume. Volume is length times width times height. Right? A centimeter is a unit of distance. The word cubic means that it measures distance in all three spacial dimensions. Length, width, and height. Centimeters cubed is a unit of volume too. It's simple. Once you realize that 1 cm^3 is equal to 1 mL, because the metric system works by decimals, its like saying if 1x is equal to 10y, how many y's are in 10x? The answer of course would be 100. Honestly, its pretty elementary math.

A cubic centimeter is equivalent to a millileter, or 1 cm2 = 1 ml. Most places do not use the cubic centimeter, which is one millioneth of a cubic meter, favoring the millileter, which is one thousandth of a liter, which is slightly larger than a quart. Doctors and nurses would use the milliliter more, as to how much of a liquid medicine is given to a patient or how many milliliters are drawn.

A cubic centimetre (symbol cm³ or cc) (US spelling: cubic centimeter) is a commonly used unit of volume extending the derived SI-unit cubic metre and corresponds to the volume of a cubed box measuring 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm. One cubic centimetre corresponds to a volume of 1⁄1000000 of a cubic metre, or 1⁄1000 of a litre; therefore, 1 cm³ = 1 ml. In many scientific fields, the use of cubic centimetres has been replaced by the millilitre which was used when litre was an SI base prior to 1976. The medical and automotive fields are two of the few fields wherein the term cubic centimetre was never discontinued in the USA. In the UK ml is used in preference to cc in the medical field. The initialism cc or term cubic centimetre should not be used in favor of centimetres cubed cm³.
