You are probably thinking of the Shettles Method which is based on the premise that sperm carrying the X and Y chromosomes have different characteristics and that you can influence the reproductive environment to favor one or the other. While there is some controversy surrounding both the credibility and the morality of the method, here's how the theory goes:

It is the sperm that fertilizes the egg that will determine the sex of your baby. Some sperm carry the X-chromosome and some sperm carry the Y-chromosome. If an X-chromosome-carrying sperm fertilizes the egg, the baby will be a girl. If a Y-chromosome-carrying sperm fertilizes the egg, the baby will be a boy.

The idea behind the Shettles Method of sex selection is based on the premise that the X and Y chromosome carrying sperm have different characteristics and that under different circumstances either X- or Y-chromosome-carrying sperm will be more likely to fertilize the egg.

The Y-chromosome-carrying sperm are said to:

be faster and smaller than the X-chromosome carrying sperm.
die faster than the X-chromosome-carrying sperm.
The X-chromosome-carrying sperm are said to:

be slower than the Y-chromosome carrying sperm.
be better able to withstand the acidic cervical environment before fertile cervical fluid is produced.
Based on these premises, according to Shettles, you can time intercourse, choose a sexual position that favors conception of your preferred sex and influence the reproductive environment to increase the likelihood of conceiving your preferred sex. These are the suggestions from Dr. Shettles:

To Get A Boy (According to Shettles):

Time intercourse as close to ovulation as possible: The idea is that since the Y-chromosome sperm are faster than the X-chromosome sperm, there will be more Y-chromosome sperm who reach the egg, making it more likely that a Y-chromosome carrying sperm will fertilize the egg.
Abstain from intercourse for four to five days prior to ovulation. Have intercourse only just at the time of ovulation and just before.
Have intercourse that allows for deep penetration. Shettles recommends rear-entry (aka, “doggy-style”). The idea is that the sperm will be deposited closer to the cervix where cervical fluid is most friendly to the Y-chromosome sperm and where the “boy sperm” are more likely to survive since there is less distance to travel.
Men avoid tight clothes: heat kills off both types of sperm, but will kill off the less protected, smaller Y-chromosome sperm faster, according to Shettles.
Women have an orgasm: According to Shettles, female orgasm increases the alkaline secretions in the vagina that are favorable to the Y-chromosome carrying sperm. Shettles recommends having an orgasm before or at the same time as the male partner.
To Get a Girl (According to Shettles):

Have intercourse 2-3 days before ovulation and avoid intercourse just before ovulation until 2 days after ovulation and when you have peak cervical fluid: The idea is that when you have sex a few days before ovulation, only the X-chromosome “girl sperm” will be left in the female reproductive tract waiting to fertilize the egg when it is released.
Have intercourse with shallow penetration: Shettles recommends “missionary position”or any position that will deposit the sperm slightly away from the cervix, giving advantage to the longer living, but slower X-chromosome-carrying sperm.
Women avoid orgasm: Shettles suggests women avoid orgasm because it makes the vaginal environment more alkaline, and less acidic and is disadvantageous to the X-chromosome “girl sperm”.
If you are taking longer than expected to conceive, it is generally not recommended to attempt any kind of sex selection as it can increase the time it takes to conceive.

I also had two boys and it was make it or break it to have a girl, lol...

Track your cycles on the calender and time intercourse to occur 5-6 days before ovulation. The reason for this is two fold. The male sperm are really small and agile. They race up to that tube and swim around and wait, but die off in 2-3 days. The bigger, slower female sperm will mosey on up there and wait, but they are more robust and live 5-7 days. By the time you ovulate, you're egg will be bombarded with female sperm that want to win!

I had intercourse 6 days before, then 5 days before, and not at all after that. Sure enough, I missed my period and found out at 5 months that the baby was a girl. She is now 8 years old!

Hi,

I have a friend who had three boys and wanted a girl. She went on a special diet and also had sex on certain days. She had a baby girl next time around.
At the end of the day there is no 100% guarantee to conceive a girl, so you have to be sure you would be happy with a boy before you embark on this!
Good luck !

Y (male) chromosomed sperm swim faster than X (female) chromosomed sperms.

So by that theory, if you have sex very close to your ovulation day, the Y's will get there faster and will be the most likely to fertilize the egg.

If you have sex several days before your ovulation, the slow and steady X's will still be swimming while the Y's have already tired out, therefore making it more likely that an X will fertilize the egg.

Of course, everything is left to chance according to a particularly strong X or a particularly slow Y or knowing exactly when you ovulate, etc...

They say......if you want to increase your chances of having a girl then don't do it on O day. You have to do it a couple of days prior...then nothing until after you ovulate. In order to know when you O your going to have to start charting your temp for a couple of months and watch for temps to go up. This indicates that you have O'd. So the next month watch your CF and when it starts to get stretchy and egg white then you are starting to be fertile so this is when you should the baby dance. This is because the girl sperm live longer than the boys so will be in your uterus when the egg comes available. My sister-in-law and her mother swear by this and it actually has a name to the method. (sorry but can't recall right now)

I have heard of different things you can do to increase your chances for a girl. You may want to look on the internet and see.
You can always go to your OB and ask them. There is a thing where they can do gender selection. I am not sure what the percentage of accuracy is, but I am sure your OB can tell you can probably find it on the internet.
I can tell you that whatever I did it was not successful because I had three boys on top of the two she had from a previous marriage.

we are in the opposite situation so if you find out any tricks let me know. We have two girls and want a boy. I am pregnant now but we still don't know the sex yet. I am 5 months today and we are praying for a boy.

None of them work, there is absolutely no way of actually getting a girl besides adoption. The most scientific way is based on the fact that boy sperm swim faster but die first, and girl sperm swim slower but live longer. That said, they say that having sex a couple of days before you ovulate will more likely give you a girl (because the boy sperm will have all died out and the girl sperm will have survived to implant) and if you have sex on the day you ovulate you are more likely to get a boy (because the boy sperm would make it to the egg faster) but there is absolutely no scientific proof or even validity to any of it. There's really no way to make for sure.

Well girls are not suppose to die off as quick as boys. So you can try when you are farther from ovulation to try and weed out the boys. But that is just another old wives tale...that I tried the opposite of to get a boy (along with other wives tales). Something did work! I got my boy after three girls! :) Good luck!
