But never had one.

Do most people think they are worth the cost or more expensive than they are worth?

As a poor boat owner I think I'm well qualified to answer this question. You'll have more fun then you've ever had, you'll find more friends then you've ever known, and you'll spend more money then you ever thought was possible. Boats are alot of fun when your playing however there is a fair amount of maintance required, gas is expensive and boats generally don't get the best mileage. Your friends well be the first ones on and off, they're terrible at cleaning and generally well not respect your boat as much as you. Of course its just a boat to them, however to us owners its a sizeable investment that were making huge payments on. And try getting gas money out of your friends! lol Good luck! Even though I deal with all these issues I love my boat, and would sell off my house before i'd get rid of my boat. Its a lifestyle choice. Good luck with your boat shopping!

A boat is a hole in the water you throw money into.at least when it's time for it to go you get some back.and you have fun with it. An it never has a head ache only is a head ache. If you get threw that than your ready to have fun buy a boat. I have had 25 have a 48' sportfish the love of my life.Decide how many you will have on it, what are you going to use it for, how often.Bay Or ocean. make a list then that will tell you the kind & size. Take a Coast Guard course , Power squarden course or what is in your area, then rent some boats till you find what you like an scratch there's not yours.

There is an old saying........
Its a happy day when you buy a boat & a happy day when you sell it.
Just parted with a nice old 22ft sailboat after many years of enjoyment.
Had my fun & do not miss it all that much.
Boating is great sport & either exciting or relaxing depening on the boat & your interests.
There is another adage which makes some sense & that is to get the smallest boat that is suitable for your needs but still safe for the conditions you expect to use it in.
Keeping that in mind less is sometimes more.
The fewer gagets( except for those reqd for safety) means less to take care of.
Things to consider are.... trailer or slip.
Trailerable boats are generally easier to sell.
Some boats in this class (18 to 22ft )may have small cabins w/ a place to pee & change.
Power or sail.....your call.
Generally sailboats require less maint. than a power boat.
Have to consider gas prices these days.
Well worth it if it gives you some joy & you can manage the costs
Might visit some boat dealers & see what's out there new & used.
Definitely talk to experienced boaters for advice & the coast guard auxiliary for info on regs in your area.
Best regards

hi ,,,, get what you can afford...
Ok.. heres the the reality of boat ownership..
Theres insurance, theres maintainance and theres running cost.
Think what do i want the boat for... cruising , fishing skiing. or party..... Never spend your full budget... keep some in reserve for all the extras you need to buy,,,,,,, pdfs, lights safety equipment... etc.
DOnt get too big a boat that you have problems towing it... dont get wone too big for where you want to go..
We got a 21ft center console becasue we really the look of it and we thought we would like ocean fishing..... we ended up selling it becasue we could get out on it that often due to weather and it was too deep a hull to use in the local rivers and lakes. We like ake and river fishing more... and we got sea sick in the ocean.
If you are new to boating get the book boating for dummies .. it taught me a lot and i have been boating for years....
Another thing.. its gonna be your boat .. your insurance... if one of your friends drinks onboard drives and crashes .. its your loss..
Boats are always more expensive than they are worth. But people paythe money becasue they are fun... Its the extras and running cost that are expensice.

It may be a good idea to take a look at a book that was just released on Amazon, Barnes & Nobel and KIndle. The title is SO, YOU WANT TO BUY A BOAT?
The book is chock full of answers to many questions that wannabe boaters have. It is a quick read and it has a humorous twist that makes it fun to read.
