We have recently installed BT wireless internet however the signal is weak if the router is at the top of the house - we can not place it in the middle and if it as the bottom of the house the signal is too weak at the top. Therefore I was wondering if two routers (access points) could be installed at different points of the house sharing the same internet connection but having seperate wireless routers so that whether you are at the top or the bottom you still get a strong signal.

You can do that, you would be better off just adding another ACCESS POINT not another router.

Or you could just add a "REPEATER" which is actually a method of signal boosting. It gets placed somewhere with good reception and repeats all it hears as would another AP.
You do loose some speed with the repeater but not much.

Yes you can do it with no problem using either a second access point and an Ethernet cable between the AP and the first router (assuming the first has an Ethernet port), or you could use a repeater. Or you could use extend your network using two Ethernet to power-line adaptors.

For some reason Netgear ADSL routers like DG834s are cheaper on EBay than straight access points - if you did want to buy a second hand one - setting it up would be slightly more involved.

You DO NOT need a second Internet connection as the poster above suggests.

You can have as many access points as you want with just one modem. I have seven wifi points that i can access with my psp and my three laptops the wifi's are usb devices only cost £30 each.

This would require a second DSL line.
Instead try having the antenna(s) parallel to the floor, this gives better coverage up and down.
Another idea tho it looks weird is

This actually works
