Tom T - That was a low blow.

If I thought about calling someone an 'N' instead of actually saying it - is there a difference? No, I don't think so.

I suppose it is because it is so widely used today by African Americans and typically it's young whites wanting to be a part of that culture.

They have no concept of why blacks have taken ownership of the word. They have no concept that when a black person says it, it's because they have taken control over the "slave owners" of the past.

Young whites have no idea most of the time why it is so insulting to an African American person using the word.

I agree with Oprah and Maya Angelou, I think the word should be done away with all together....but then again, this is America and you can't take away a persons free speech.

Well, for one, some are racist, but the better reason is because black people use it as a means of fellowship (such as, what up ma dot dot dot) BUT when a white boy says it it automatically means he's a racist sonofabitch....even though they may be black-wannabe's or whatever...but it IS just a word, just like why do 'some' blacks call white people "Crackers" or whatever, but we don't really make a big deal out of it most of the time...it's an unfair world out there...it's not equal no matter WHAT people may think or say...it's just a word, let it get you mad and it controls you more than you know...sad isn't it?

Why should the N word be taboo for a white person to say. If 1 person (any color) uses the word, then it is OK for everyone to use. I think many whites are getting sick of blacks isolating themselves from others but blaming the others for it. Why is it ok for their to be an African American Music Awards or a Latino Music Awards? If there was an all white Caucasian Music Awards it wouldn't be allowed.

Limited vocabulary
Extremes either: want to identify with the black community, or
want to express a "shocking" negative feeling towards blacks.

Thank-you for recognizing "some" (few) whites are guilty.

I was talking to my husband about this and he asked me"If white people started calling each other the H word or the C word, do I think that black people would be dying to use it too?" We both said "No" at the same time.

to tell you the real truth this country does have free speech and they should be able to say whatever they want just like everyone else. I think that if all words decribing race were abolished then the world would be a better place.

Because some white people feel that it's a word that they came up with so they should be able to use it. I don't beleive anyone should be able to say that word. There is too much hurt tied on to it.

For the same reason 'some' blacks want to use it.

Who cares? It's just a stupid word, and the more people let it 'mean', the more it controls them.

It's just a word.

I don't know a lot of people who use the word except for African-Americans. But I guess the answer to your Q is you always want to do what you can't.
