.....Some people rely on instinct, intuition and feelings more than they rely on rules and logic to get through the day. Their spontaneity works better in "chaotic" disorganized and unpredictable lifestyles, much better than in regimented, orderly ones - even though it causes the complications you describe. A quiet, serene well-ordered life would not seem real to such a person...would give them the heebie-jeebies.

I believe you are have a difficulty discerning between a complex life and a complicated life. There is nothing wrong with having many irons in the fire as long as they don't cause problems in your life. Some people are truly charged when challenged and it makes them more energized and successful. However, if taking on so many tasks causes misery and suffering, you need to examine items and be able to say "no" to yourself and others.
I also see from your response many things that don't relate to chaos, but self-destructive behaviors in general. You may be actually punishing yourself for some perceived failure or value decision you don't want to face. By moving from one area to another, you feel you can run from the issue, while actually just stacking issue upon issue.

Again, it has to do with their personality type. While some folks are meticulous, neat, well-mannered and organized, there are others like the woman you describe. Usually you can tell what a person is like by the way their desk looks. If it's cluttered and messy, that's probably the way their life is. If it's neat as a pin, you may have to take your shoes off if you go to their home. But I would wager to say that just about everyone is a combination of the two. ( I know I am! )

I have come to believe that this sort of thing is an addiction the same way someone might be addicted to alcohol or drugs. People such as this(I was married to one for over 10 years) This method of living has become so ingrained into their daily lives that they only know how to function in that way. Even though they know in their subconscience they have a problem they deny it and blame their problems on other or on circumstances. The only solution is for them to acknowledge the problem and see themselves and begin to practice a new way of life(recovery) This is a slow and painful process.

I think it has to do with them not being able to find any kind of inner peace. They let themselves be defined by the outside world and not their own feelings and desires. It's easy to not be "real" when your life is a constant bombardment of self created drama. They create the drama and then complain about it. Maybe this is done to invent a sense of self importance where there really isn't any. People like this boggle my mind. I couldn't live like that and I'm always trying to avoid being sucked into their drama. I prefer my peaceful day to day existence.

There is a saying "There is comfort in their misery". It may not be a pleasant life but at least they know what to expect and have become comfortable in misery. Change is an unknown and it is paralyzes them from breaking the pattern they have learned to accept.

god that's such a good question. it's SOO true though, us as human beings just LOVE chaos.. we complain about it constantly but we'd be nothing without it. I think life would be boring without chaos. It's that balance, I suppose, of good and bad that we need. We couldn't live with just good.. as much as it sounds like a nice idea in theory.. it wouldn't work. we need chaos. it's our nature.

Exactly what is wrong with life being periodically predictable and "boring?" Why does there always have to be a source of entertainment and novelty for some individuals?
