I send it back. If you don't send it back, the kitchen will think they did a good job. And if you don't tell the waitstaff and manager/owner, they won't know why their restaurant goes out of business. It actualy helps the restaurant if you tell them when they make a mistake. Otherwise they keep making it and piss off more people.
And I'd still leave a good tip if the waiter was good but the food wasn't. It isn't the waiter's fault.

I believe that all restaurants should have a standard. If you think you are paying too much for the food which was not good at all then I believe you should complain if that has not been to your expectation, as we say 'consumer sovereighty'-consumer is king
Sometimes when you don't like the food or the service and if you are scared to complain, when you pay the bill don't leave a tip- as this is a reward for good service.
There is a lot of people who is in the same boat as you, It takes only one to voice out the opinion and others will follow.
You don't need to be rude. A complain is not about rudeness but about knowing what you want and you can do this n a polite way as well.
Good Luck to you.

The key word here is service.
Restaurants are in the service business. That's why you are not eating at home.
Managers need to know if the service is bad because they are often too busy to check on whether their people are doing their jobs right. It is your obligation to let them know.
Food complaints should also be expressed. The chef or cook should never feel insulted if one of his preperations was not done correctly. Maybe he overlooked something or just didn't know the proper method of preparing your food. Letting him/her know will help him/her to avoid making the same mistake next time.
One should always complain in a nice way. Accidents happen. Mistakes happen. And we are all human no matter what job we are doing. Be polite. If the problem is not corrected properly or in a timely manner, then you can consider other options such as not tipping or loudly complaining to the owner/manager in front of the other patrons. Perhaps going so far as refusing to pay for your meal.
Also, don't forget to thank those who do their service as required. Especially verbally award those who perform above the average. If the meal was delicious, send your compliments to the chef/cook. It will be appreciated by them. The resturaurant business can sometimes be a difficult and thankless job.

Depends on what I'm complaining about.
If the dishes are less than clean or my beverage glass has something in it - then yes I will kindly request a fresh beverage or clean dish/eating utensil.
But beyond that - I rarely complain. I had to speak up recently when dining out...Ordered a pasta dish and by the time I received my meal it was ice cold and that was unacceptable.
Typically I won't return to a restaurant if the service is totally bad or I'll journey to the restaurant web site and relay my bad experience there.

As a server, I expect my guests to have a wonderful experience. If there is an issue with a dinner, I would like the chance to correct it. Most problems can be resolved in a timely manner.
For service problems, I recommend that you speak with the manager/owner, as well as your server. Simply neglecting to leave a tip is unacceptable, unless you plan on never returning, as the manager will be unaware that you are less than happy.
On the other hand, if you had a great time, let your server know. A short note, a word to the management, AND a great tip are always appreciated.

Yes.
But, Don't blame the waitstaff on ill prepared food or even it taking a long time. Send it back nicely.if it is bad. A good server will notice if you don't like your food and offer to bring you something else. Hold the waitstaff responsible only for what they should be responsible for...in attention or rude service. Also, it is important to tell management of superior service.

Yes.
No gratuity.
Ask for the manager/manageress and tell them how it is.
A new restaurant opened in our area some two years ago.
We took a friend for a meal!
No welcome
No lemonade or bitter lemon.
The owner did not know what an avocado looked liked.
We paid the bill - without tip.
After passing on our comments to at least 40 local friends the restaurant closed 4 months after our visit.
Sad but inevitable
When the bill (in Yorkshire remember) comes to £60+ for a mediocre meal one expects a good meal - at least!
Keep complaining we are too restrained!

Yes, I complain if the food is not right, or good. I'm paying for it. If the service is bad I just do not leave a tip.

No... I like to give people the benefit of the doubt... and most restaurants aren't going to GO OUT OF BUSINESS from one bad plate of food or one bad waiter like another answer suggested. I am aware that I take that risk going out to eat and I don't like to cause conflict or upset anyone.

I don't always complain at the time for fear of them spitting in my food! I usually find out the address of the head office and write them a short letter pointing out their errors and usually they reply with a money off voucher for next time.
