I need some remedies to keep the snakes out of my pond that I had built, they are eating my fish. I heard put a rope around the edge because snakes dont like to crawl over it with their bellies, I heard trying mothballs, putting diesel fuel around the edge, but I dont want to try that because when it rains it will flow into the pond. I need help, these are cottonmouth snakes. I live in Branson Mo

Keeping snakes out of a pond is extremely tough. Even worse when they can fight back! If places properly, you should be able to use some mothballs in certain places and deter many of the snakes, but if you have had the problem more than a week, it's quite likely the snakes have set up house-keeping in your pond and won't be chased off that easily. Killing them or having the removed by a professional may well be your only options if they have become comfortable in the pond.

Snake Habitat
Snakes often live in cool, dark places where food is abundant. Likely places to find snakes around homes include:
• Firewood or haystacks directly on the ground.
• Old lumber, rock or junk piles.
• Gardens and flower beds with heavy mulch.
• Untrimmed shrubs and bushes growing next to a foundation.
• Unmowed and unkempt lawns, abandoned lots and fields with tall vegetation.
• Pond and stream banks with abundant debris or trash.

The environment around a home can be made less attractive to snakes by removing potential snake shelters (usually cool, dark, damp hiding places) and food sources (rodents).

Lawns and fields that are kept clean and closely mowed are less attractive to snakes than areas with tall grass, weeds, brush and junk. Remove other snake hiding places such as old boards lying on the ground, rock and junk piles and trash piles. Trim shrubs and trees so limbs hang no lower than 12 inches from the ground. Stack firewood away from the home on a rack that sits at least 12 inches from the ground.

Keeping the yard clean also removes habitat for rodents, a favorite snake food. Other suggestions for reducing rodents include placing garbage in sealed trash cans (not bags) away from the house. If you feed pets outside, keep all dog and cat food cleaned up after each feeding and store feed in a steel trash can so it is unavailable to rodents

Plant garlic or vetiver by the pond to keep a away snakes and rodents ( snake lunch).

Cat love kill snakes and rodents. This may help you .

Branson, Mo, eh? Well, you could always hire out of work actors and singers and bankrupt gamblers to stand guard around the pond. Pay them minimum wage and give them all the snakes they can eat. Some may work for food alone.
