I refuse to shop at sears. I have a couple of issues with them. I had went to a local store to buy a stove a few years back. I went into the store with cash, had the truck to take it home with me, everything. I looked around found the stove I wanted and told the salesperson that I wanted to buy that stove. The salesperson (a snotty teenager) told me that I couldn't take the stove that day that they would order it for me and then deliver it for a fee or I could come back and pick it up. Well I asked to speak with a manager she came out and I told her, I have cash, a truck, and want a stove I can take home today. She showed me one stove that she said was the only one in the store that I could take that day. I said well let me have my husband come in and look at it to see if he likes it. SHe then proceeded to tell me that if I walked out the door to the parking lot that I couldn't buy the stove. I said ok...I'll take my business elsewhere. I did I went up the road to Lowes and bought another stove that I liked better for a cheaper price. The reason I was in such a hurry to buy the stove is that we live in a very rural town and had to drive almost an hour to even buy the stove. I didn't have the time or the money to make the trip twice and couldn't afford what it would have cost to have it delivered.
My issue with service of said stove (i didn't realize that sears would cover the service when I bought it or I probably wouldn't have) the electronic range control (erc) device went out on the stove. I had researched this enough to know that was pretty much what it was. I called to see if my warranty was still valid. I was told yes, we will send a repair man. The person (from sears, i had no idea till he showed up) came out looked at the stove, I told him what it was doing and I said I think it is the erc...he said kinda snotty, well what do you need me for?! He gave me an estimate to fix the stove to which I said no thank you, then gave me a bill. He said that my warranty had just ran out. When I dug out my receipts it had ran out about 2 weeks earlier. Why didn't the lady on the phone tell me this??? So I had to pay this guy almost a hundred bucks to tell me I knew what the part was. I went bought the part, had my hubby put it on and still saved 200 bucks compared to what this guy want to charge me.

The problem is not Sears, per se, but those that Sears does subcontracting with to perform this type of work. My father had Sears come out to his house to give his Lawn Mower a tune up and he had no problem. However, I have heard the same types of horror stories regarding other issues such as siding installation, etc.

I have to agree with Marsh. I have had no trouble with Sears service. Even had a serviceman tell me about a recall on my frig that was 5 years old. They replaced the compressor free. As far as tool replacement, I did have a salesman hand me a repair kit for a ratchet. I made him show me where in the Craftsman warranty it says I have to repair it. Wasn't there. The Manager tried to tell me that was a new thing so I quoted him a $20 minimum on my labor. He gave me a new ratchet.

We purchased a refrigerator a few years ago. It was the floor demo and we got a good deal on it.
To make a long story short, we had problems with the ice maker. We had them come out twice. On the third occasion, the told me to go back to the store and pick out a new one at the full price.
When we did that and arranged for delivery, we asked them if they would pick up the one with the ice maker problem. Their response was "Sir, there is nothing here that says we need to pick it up unless you REALLY want us to!"
Translation, I have the best looking garage refrigerator in the neighborhood!

According to my mom, their service sucks, and I remember hearing Sears horror stories 30 years ago.

and on the other side of the coin, I buy many craftsman tools and lawnmowers and have never had a service or replacement issue with any of them. The tools I have brought in were immediately replaced...and the last mower i bought they drove 45 miles to replace a tire..different folks..different strokes i guess

Just went yesterday to bring back a tool with a lifetime guarantee, they had it on the shelf but would no longer give you the one off the shelf, have to wait for it to get shipped to them... you know so they get their money before you get your tool. Poor service now.

They are good for giving replacement craftsman tools if one breaks. As far as service(fixing or replacing appliances) I have yet to hear anything GOOD about them.
