Knowing my luck the account would be overdrawn and I would get bank charges for trying to cash it.

Certainly not.
I would contact the person who's name was on the check and ask him / her how he would like me to dispose of it. If he asked me to tear it up I would, but first I'd write VOID on it, tear it up and then mail the unusable check back to him.
Anything less would be unethical.
I once found an entire traveller's chequebook in a pub. The place was a trifle seedy, so rather than giving it to the bartender, ( there was no manager on duty at the time) I called the individual and offered to mail it back to him. He told me that he needed it immediately, but was without transportation at the time, so I drove a fair distance to deliver it in person.
He offered me a small reward, which I declined.
As it turned out, he eventually became a client of mine through a distantly related business association. He remembered the event years afterwards and has rewarded my company with many referrals.
I do not believe in Karma, or any other superstitious nonsense, but cause and effect is real.
Ethics always pay off in the long run.

No I would take it to the police station or to the bank the cheque belonged to. Most likely the bank.
It could be a little old lady or man.. I would never take a penny that didn't belong to me. Not even if they were a millionaire.
I have always struggled with money but am honest. Trustworthy. Means a lot to me. If it was Simon Cowls from TV.. hopefully he would contact me to thank me.. and whisk me off in his limo into the sunset.. sigh......
That is a good question. All the best now.

No, because a cheque can easily be tracked which means I can easily be caught!

hell no..coz 90% of cases you'll get caught...if i need the money badly i'll go for an armed robbery instead where it is 50-50 but remember ..whenever you have a 50-50 chance of doing something right you have a 90 percent chance of doing it wrong...so either way don't do it..

There's not really anyway to use it unless it's signed by the account holder. Otherwise you're just gonna get in trouble.

No because they check your ID when using checks so with my luck it would all get traced back to me and then Id end up in jail for fraud, theft, and whatever else they can tack on to that. Ill just keep living humbly, but honestly, in poverty. :)
