Kind of like this......
I drive a rusty ole pick-up live in the country so far out we have to pump in SUNSHINE and i have a 30 year shingle roof
Drive 30 miles from my house to the rich neighborhood and you'll find "BMW's" MERCEDES PORSHE parked in the driveway of a house with copper roof system.
It's a matter of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If you mean the entire roof, that's a matter of design choice. If you are asking why copper is added it is to keep roof shingles from streaking and discoloring from rain. Better quality shingles have copper in them to prevent that.

Copper is used mostly for looks. In most climates the copper turns from a gold color to green which gives a certain look architects like.

one reason is that many roof products, especially red cedar, contain agents that are corrosive to tin and lead flashing. copper is in this case very necessary
