My 7 week old son missed a feeding this morning...he's been asleep since 7AM, and hasn't eaten yet, though his Dad is warming up a breastmilk bottle now (it's 1200)! Is this normal?

He normally is very awake in the day and sleeps 3-4 hours per night. This is the first day time feeding he's slept through!

Sometimes when baby's are going through a growth spurt they will sleep more and maybe he's just getting to the point where he's going to sleep for longer periods of time. My first daughter slept through the night from six weeks on, I realize now that I'm a mother of 4 little girls that she was a blessing! haha....

It's normal to worry, but all this talk about schedules and stuff (in my opinion) is for the birds. Baby's are the best indicator of when they're hungry, when they need to sleep and so on, they'll let you know what they need when they need it. So let him sleep, he'll wake up when he's hungry.

Most 7 week olds will do one five-hour stretch of sleep each day. So not eating for five hours is not the biggest deal. The bigger deal is that if he sleeps his 5-hour stretch during the day, he probably won't sleep that stretch at night. In the future you might want to make sure not to let him sleep for more than a three hour stretch during the day. Wake him up, feed him, play a bit (as much as you can with a 7mo), and then put him back down. You will be a happier mama in the morning when he DOES do that 5 hour stretch but does it at night.

The bigger deal with his missing feedings at this age is your own milk production. Make sure that if it does happen that you pump to keep up your production for that feeding.

One other thing. Babies who are in the middle of a growth spurt will spend a few days eating like crazy and then one or two days sleeping like crazy. If that is the pattern, just let him sleep. The funny thing is when they wake up in the morning and you're SURE they just got bigger!

A newborn may sleep as much as 16 hours a day (or even more), often in stretches of 3 to 4 hours at a time. And like the sleep all of us experience, babies have different phases of sleep: drowsiness, REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, light sleep, deep sleep, and very deep sleep. As babies grow, their periods of wakefulness increase.

Many pediatricians recommend that a parent not let a newborn sleep too long without feeding. They say to wake them up after 3-4 hours to feed. 5 hours isn't too bad. He will wake up to feed or get a diaper change. If he sleeps longer than 5 hours it's best to wake him up and feed him.

I hope this helps.

Newborns will sleep all the time if you let them. I will tell you what others suggested to me. Wake him up during the day and feed him on schedule (about every 2-3 hours). You can do this by brushing his skin, or in extreme cases....take off his clothes and dab him with a cool wet towel to keep him awake. Let him feel the sunlight a bit....I believe this subdues the melatonin in his skin and helps him learn when to be awake.

It took me about two weeks to "train" my daughter to be awake more during the day than at night. Of course, I would NOT wake him up for a feeding at night unless he begins losing weight and your doctor tells you to do so.

God Bless

As Long as he is Breathing it is fine.He is only 7 weeks old and needs all the sleep he can get, when Babies sleep they are growing.I know the Flu bug has been going around.I have not felt good at all for 2 days,All I want to do is lay down and rest or sleep,so just keep a eye on him just in case he is trying to catch something.

Yes, this is fine. By this time most babies are on a 3-4 hour schedule, even if you demand feed. Don't worry, he was probably more tired than hungry. Good luck.

it can be odd when the baby starts sleeping for longer periods. im sure he's fine, but i would just make sure he doesn't miss a second feeding.

That is perfectly normal. If he is sleeping then just let him sleep. He will wake up when he's hungry.

I agree with teh previous answers, totally normal for babies to do that from time to time, just watch that it doesn't become a habit.

it is normal but you should try to stay as close to a schedule as you can. you may be up all night if he sleeps all day.
